In times of the pandemic, we have to account for the possible impact and delays on student visas. In India, with the uncertainty of opening of consulates and travel bans, USC Viterbi School of Engineering is offering various options for students to enroll for Fall 2020. Newly admitted masters-level International students can: attend in-person starting August 24th, or select an October 2020 in-person start for a compressed Fall Semester, or an online for Fall 2020 start and an in-person start in Los Angeles in Spring 2021 or Fall 2021.
With online classes on the rise, you might be concerned about distance learning. You need not be. The USC Viterbi Distance Education Network (DEN), which started in 1971 provides an effective and robust online-learning delivery model. Nowadays, over 40 masters-level programs are offered in a hybrid model allowing for synchronous learning and asynchronous learning (online). For eight years in a row, the school’s online computer science degree program has been ranked #1 according to US News and World Report.
Do you need a broadcast-style control room to run a distance learning initiative? No. But it helps. The nerve center for USC Viterbi DEN resides in a control center which has 20 staff members supporting classrooms and providing instructional, and technical services. Before the coronavirus pandemic, it helped to support 140 classes each semester across 17 hybrid classroom facilities. This effort has since expanded.
This dedicated team provides real-time feedback to ensure content is interactive and allows for peer to peer interaction. In fact, the USC Viterbi DEN platform has been leveraged for the school’s iPodia initiative to support dialogue among a global network of classrooms. In India, universities like Birla Institute of Technology and Science-- Pilani in Hyberabad, and India Institute of Technology, Mumbai, have participated in this program along with universities in Germany, South Korea, Brazil, Israel and Qatar. This allows students to go to school and solicit ideas from all over the world.
Now, as USC prepares for a hybrid learning in Fall, the DEN team is in the midst of converting even more classes. With USC’s strong ties to the commercial space industry, a professor who is a former astronaut and former head of space operations of the commercial space company SpaceX is converting his courses on human space flight and human factors. Newer courses are also being converted, all the while preparing for a COVID response.
Outside of the coursework—the USC Viterbi community is resilient. That’s a big piece of being a USC Trojan. As a school whose namesake developed the Viterbi algorithm, which allows for improved communication, we take our job of connecting our people, known as the Trojan Family, seriously. While online at this time, our career services offices and academic services are continuously providing support--even at a distance. We still want our community--including our more than 78,000 alumni around the world to continue to be engaged.
Further, while enrolled students are waiting to start their classes in August, USC Viterbi is offering free learning modules in machine learning, data science, and cryptography through Viterbi All-Access .
