“Best things in life aren’t free, after all. They are obtained through an exhausting and exhilarating journey”.
The definition of studying abroad can’t be defined but instead is a story yet to be revealed. “Admitted”, a debut non-fiction book on higher education by Soundarya Balasubramani, could be recognized as a Bible for anyone who has a dream to study abroad (available on Amazon). Before diving right into the ocean of what to do and when to do in the study abroad timeline, the author has answered the question, “Is studying abroad even the right step for you?” The amount of research and creativity the book carries is immense. When have you last read a book that has statistics, research, and a narrative all at the same time?
The narrative is beautifully knitted together so that the information is consumable despite carrying so much depth. While each chapter dives deep into a singular topic, there is a strong undercurrent of connectivity between the various chapters to build a bigger picture. The book contains a total of 18 chapters with thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter to help you ponder further on the topic in your own time. Those 18 chapters are divided into four parts that encompass your entire journey, leaving no stone unturned. The chapters range from helping you choose universities to writing your SOP to applying for scholarships. The author has not only explained the process in a detailed manner but has also included glimpses of her own experience in each chapter. These help you time travel into the future for brief moments and feel what it’s like to be studying in a new country. The book also incorporates concepts from psychology and neuroscience, aimed at helping you write better essays, study for exams like GRE, and prepare for visa interviews. Finally, the book’s graphic, short factual blocks, and framework knocks the ball out of the park.
This book will serve all the aspirants who want to study abroad, primarily those eyeing the United States as their destination. Soundarya, a gold medalist from NIT Trichy, multiple scholarship recipient, and a master’s degree holder from Columbia University is a perfect mentor to anyone who wants to study abroad. Studying abroad is not for the unmotivated and lazy. You have to do the due diligence and research well because as she says, "You choose the university as much as they choose you.”
As I read Soundarya explain her journey throughout the book as a student and mentor, I realized that for dreams to come true, you first need to endure some difficult times. Studying abroad will neither be rosy nor dreadful. As long as you set your expectations right and prepare early, you can expect a journey packed with lessons that will stay with you for life. In the end, your goals and dreams are all worth it.
