Degrees such as Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Business Management (BBM), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Arts (BA), and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in India as well as UK are usually 3 years long. Most colleges in the US only accept 16 years of education prior to post graduation for admissions to their postgraduate programmes. For students completing only 15 (12+3) years of education, the universities usually ask students to earn extra credits to fill the gap (especially by pursuing another degree course such as MCom).
In the UK, it is not a problem since most of the undergraduate courses there are 3 years long. Although US does not consider the 3 year long degrees as equivalent to its usual 4 years long degrees, the acceptance of your undergraduate education depends on the university and the school you are applying to. The following is a list of universities and colleges that acknowledge 15 (12+3) years of education
Most of these schools are the top B schools in the world. As for Canada, many schools, like Schulich School of Business, York University and Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University, accept 15 years of education (they might also demand for additional years of work experience along with minimum requirements). However, some universities, such as Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa and John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, are stiff; they only recognize 16 year (12+4) years of education. It is advised that students contact the admissions committee of all the universities they are interested in.
To address this problem, there are several pathways available to get a postgraduate degree from stiff universities accepting only 16 years of education. You could take transfer during your under graduation to some university in U.S. or Canada for the 3rd and 4th year of education. You will may have to repeat a year but this would add a year to your undergraduate education. You could also pursue a yearlong degree, such as M.Com, from India and then apply to universities abroad for a Master’s or PhD degree. Another option is to pursue a PG diploma or pre-MBA course from universities abroad and then applying for a degree programme. Contact the admissions committee of universities individually for more information.
The number of institutes recognising Indian education is increasing. Therefore, it is advised that you check with your university and its school about the same.
Furthermore, you could also get your degree evaluated by the World Education Services (WES), which is a non-profit organization that evaluates international credentials. WES recognizes some of the Indian 3 year undergraduate degrees as equivalent to a U.S. undergraduate degree only if-
The information about the universities and schools accepting the 3-years Bachelor’s degree is usually provided on their respective websites, generally in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) website. If the information is not provided, students should consider contacting the admissions coordinator for the same.
As for courses other than those relating to the management ones, you can email the university authorities or admissions coordinator regarding your case. They may or may not consider your admission.
Also, communicating with the alumni and those currently studying in your desired course will be of great help. It is advised that students should start evaluating their colleges and sending applications as early as possible.
