Want to study in Canada but without writing the IELTS exam? In case you are wondering if that’s possible or not, let us tell you that, IT IS! What if we told you that you can study in Canada’s most reputed universities without writing the IELTS test? International English Language Testing System is one of the most known English Proficiency tests world-wide. But, if you want to find an alternative to that, you are in the right place. In this article, we will be discussing the how’s, what’s and when’s of the alternative.
There could be many reasons for a person to not take the IELTS exam,
Now let's see what alternatives can we use to compensate for that.
1. English Medium of Learning
Now, when we say English Medium of Learning, we mean to say that for example if you are applying for an undergraduate program in Canada if the previous high school that you have attended has the medium of instruction as English and you have a way to prove it then you are fine by not giving the IELTS exam, provided you have to find a University which waives off the IELTS requirement. This goes the same for the Master’s degree, if the previous University that you have studied in has a medium of instruction as English, your IELTS requirement is waived off by some universities. The name of some universities which waive off IELTS requirements if sufficient documents are provided is the University of Winnipeg, University of Regina, etc.
2. Official Language of Native Country is English
Some countries like Australia, UK, Ireland, the United States, New Zealand, etc; have their official native language is English. The students who are the citizens in one of these countries need not give the IELTS exam because their official native language is English. It is always mentioned on the University’s website that the English Proficiency exam is required for these students or not. So, it’s better to check the University’s website out thoroughly. If you are a citizen of one of the English Speaking countries then you will have no problem even during your student visa interview.
3. Other English Proficiency Tests
There are several other English Proficiency tests out there that are accepted in many Canadian Universities. The other English Proficiency Tests are, Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), Pearson Tests of English (PTE), and Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL). TOEFL and PTE are mainly known for the United States because almost all the universities accept TOEFL and some accept PTE too in the US. Even in Canada, some reputed universities accept these exams too! For example the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, University of Montreal, Mcgill University, etc.
Coming onto the Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL), this test was formerly taken by Carleton University and was started in 1987. Now the test has been acquired by Paragon Testing Enterprises, a subsidiary of The University of British Columbia (UBC). There are only 6 countries that have centers for the CAEL tests namely, Canada, the United States, China, India, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates. Even among these countries, the cities which have the centers are very limited, for example in India there’s only one city that has the center i.e. Chandigarh. The CAEL is pretty much similar to all other English Proficiency tests but there are some differences too.
5. Canadian English Language School as a Prerequisite
When you have decided Canada as your destination for education and you don’t want to take IELTS, you can study English in one of the Canadian Universities for a semester or two. This allows you to get that certification and proof of your English Proficiency potential. You can even take this Canadian English Language School after you have an admit in your hand from the University which allows you to get the IELTS waived off.
Now that you know the alternatives that you can opt for, you need to choose which one fits your position to do and which one resonates with your thinking. It’s good to know everything about your dream destination for education even if you are not going to Canada for education now or the maybe next year.
