Before you start your course in the United States, you need to get vaccinated. Yes, vaccinated. The thing you got done as a child. It is compulsory according to U.S. Visa and Immigration rules.
There a list of diseases that you need to get vaccinated for. This list is given on the official website. They are:
Upon acceptance of admission to a university, you will be sent the University’s Health Form or Health Report. You need to get this form filled by a registered doctor.
In case you do not have the details of the vaccines that you took in your childhood, then you can take a titre test to prove that you are immune to the disease.
You may also need to sign a waiver stating that university doctors are allowed to treat you in case you need medical help while you study there.
Now, some of these vaccinations were given to you at birth as well. You need to present records of this (ask your parents or legal guardians) to your physician so that he/she can sign the form and verify that you have been given these vaccinations and mention the dates on the health form as well.
In accordance the U.S. Visa and Immigration rules, any immigrant visa applicant must obtain certain vaccinations before issuance of the immigrant visa. So you need to get vaccinated because it’s the law!
First, visit your physician and ask them about the vaccines. Show him/her the health form. They will guide you with what to do ahead.
You can also ask your university representative to help you with any queries. Even your counselor, if you have one, should be able to help you with all the information you need. In certain cases you will need to get vaccinated while in some cases all you need to do is get a titre test report to prove that you are immune to the disease. Again, this differs from person to person, based on your medical history.
As students, you will be given a deadline before which you need to submit the form. You should submit it by then so as to not delay your registration process.
This form needs to be submitted to the Office of Global Admissions or the Office of International Students, or whichever is specified for your university.
Additionally, you should note that there might be some vaccinations, like the Hepatitis B vaccine, which need to be taken over the course of a number of months. In case you do miss one dose due to the start date of your course, you can speak to your university rep and ask them if you can go to the U.S. and get the vaccine. However, the vaccines there are much more expensive.
