Laval University is one of the most historically important centers for higher studies. In Canada, it is the oldest university and the second oldest in the continent. It was founded in 1663 by Francois de Montmorency-Laval who went on to become the Bishop of New France. When the area was under the French regime the institution was primarily used to train priests. The university is ranked among the top ten universities in Canada in terms of research funding.
