The MS in Electrical & Computer Engineering at U Alberta is a government-designated STEM degree and so international students may be eligible for the 24-month F1 OPT (optional practical training) extension.

The program is offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Master of Science degree is a research-intensive program, usually consisting of 18 units of course weight in graduate courses, a thesis proposal course, and a thesis, twelve of the 18 units of course weight must be from ECE courses, while the remaining six units should be taken outside of the department. Students will study Power Electronics, Biophysical Measurement and Instrumentation, Digital Computer Processing of Images, Intelligent Systems Engineering, Micro fabrication and Devices etc.
