Is it a better option to pursue a PhD in CS(AI/ML) than a MS considering the current situation (Recession, Economic Fall, Covid-19 and deferred admissions) ? Asking for fall 2021. I am currently in the last semester of my undergrad.

PhD is a real pain. I see most of the people struggling and hating their lives for it. Don’t take phd unless you have real passion and you think you can sacrifice everything for PhD See more

It shouldn't. A PhD gives you 4-6 years to form a network. Plus you get to travel to conferences, seminars where you meet companies that employ people of your field. And your advisor recommends you for positions using their network. So the whole career fair/big city dynamic doesn't really come into it as much as it will with a MS degree holder. See more

@Adistudent anyway I dont think I will be able to get into the top 15. Probably eying for top 30 schools in CS. Doesn't location afftect job prospects after PhD as it does for a MS? See more

@srk2498 that question is still kind of up in the air. There's two sides to it- you can get a high quality education in mid ranked programs as well, and depending on your advisor your research could be extremely stimulating to you. So, rank really shouldn't matter. But top ranked programs usually have very high research funding, the quality of students around you is very high, which motivates you ... See more
