The Northwestern Polytechnic University, commonly known as the NPU, is a non-profit, unaccredited private institution of higher education located in Fremont, California that was founded in 1984. The University is a member of the Fremont and San Jose Chambers of Commerce. It utilizes a trimester-based academic calendar and it awards bachelors, masters, and doctor's degrees in Engineering and Business. The School of Engineering offers Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Computer Systems Engineering, Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Master of Science in Computer Science, Master of Science in Computer Systems Engineering and a Doctorate of Computer Engineering. The School of Business offers Bachelor of Business Administration and Information Sciences, Master of Business Administration and a Doctorate of Business Administration.

The Northwestern Polytechnic University is located in the Westinghouse Drive in Fremont, California, between the Warm Spring Blvd and the Kato Road. Its setting is suburban and it is surrounded by a lot of great stores and restaurants like Subway, 7-Eleven, Ajisen Ramen Restaurant, Denny’s, the Warm Spring Plaza mall and others to ensure that the students have a lot to do off-campus as well. The NPU is located near the high-tech capital of the world, San Jose, and is it also not far from cities like Berkeley, Palo Alto and San Francisco.
Honestly, the University is not a big name and hence Infrastructure is not too fancy. In fact, the University by itself is only a few buildings and parking spaces.
The NPU Housing believes that on campus students live their college experience to the fullest and the University can help you through this transition. The staff is ready to assist students with any information they need regarding housing, meal plans and services. Even though the university does not have on campus residence building they have residence near campus that they administrate. For on campus housing students need to apply through the student portal to guarantee their new home in the NPU housing community. The NPU offers residences with double rooms one or more rooms, the rooms are fully furnished, and they offer laundry room, dining table, private balcony, high speed internet and a full kitchen. Off campus housing in the bay area is, unfortunately, not a bargain, since this is a really expensive city; however, if you are running with luck you can always search apartments in famous portals like Zillow or Craiglist to find a good offer.
Fremont, California has an average temperature of 60°F. The warm season is really long and arid, from June to October and the temperature rises over 43°F - 80°F. Summers in Fremont are usually really warm but rarely goes above 91°F. The cold season is usually short and cold; the annual low temperature is 49°F. Winter lasts from November to February and the temperature rarely goes below 35°F. In Fremont even though winter is short, the wind is cold and a good jacket is always a great option. On the other hand, don’t worry about the Fremont weather since is mostly sunny.
According to a few newspaper reports and investigations, there has been some concern regarding the quality of education at NPU. Its accreditation and quality have been doubted and red flags have been raised about the same by some news agencies and anonymous reviewers. The NPU does not count with many types of financial assistance; they don’t have federal support, grants or loans, but they do have a tuition scholarship program that was established to honor meritorious and multifaceted students. Students eligible for the scholarships are freshman as well as current students each semester. The scholarships available for new applicants include the President’s Scholarships for Bachelors, which grants a full scholarship with a minimum GPA of 3.30 on a 4.00 scale; the President’s Scholarships for Masters which applies the same requisites as the Bachelors one. Academic Excellence Scholarship for Bachelors and Masters grants a 50% tuition scholarship with a minimum GPA of 3.00; Dean’s Scholarship, which grants a low percentage tuition scholarship where is requested to the applicant to make a resume or a statement that describes the applicant's academic goal. For current students, there is the Outstanding Student Scholarship, which is a $1,000 scholarships awarded to students that maintain an honor GPA. For students who want to apply to a Master, there are three options of scholarships, a full tuition, half tuition and 30% tuition that are going to depend on the GPA and if the applicants are NPU Alumni. There isn’t a Scholarship for International Students designed by the University; however, they provide information of outside organizations that assist international students financially that can be applicable to the university’s programs.
The NPU has a few options for student employment, one of them is the Curricular Practical Training known as CPT, this is an alternative internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with a school. Another option of student employment is the Optional Practical Training is work authorization available to international students who have been in valid F-1 status for about two consecutive trimesters and who plan to stay in the USA after finishing studies. The last option is the on-campus jobs which offer part time positions in facilities management, administration and instructional assistants. NPU Alumni salary after 1 to 4 years of experience in the area of engineer is about $97,500 which is very above average in comparison to other careers.
The NPU has a gender distribution of 61% of male students and 39% female students. The NPU campus diversity is above average, in fact, more than a half of the population are no US residents, students claim there is a big Indian community on campus. Some reports even suggested that the number of Indian students in the University was over 95%. When it comes to the nightlife even though is not a party school there a lot of great bar in Fremont for those who are interested including the California Craft Beer, Tequila Shots Bar & Grill and O’Sullivan’s Sports Bar
The Northwestern Polytechnic University is a small school with only 4 buildings, Business, Admin, Library, and Engineering. The University does not get much attention from US citizen since most of the students and professors seem to be foreign. International (especially Indian) students like this university because is a small campus where they feel comfortable and tuition is very affordable and at the same time is in a good location surrounded by the biggest technology companies. Even though there are a lot of Indian students here, there has been some concern in the past about Indian students studying in the University and the University was in the news for some notorious reasons.
