About

La Trobe University was started in the year 1964 with the purpose to establish an institution to fulfil the need for of higher education of global reputation in the post-World War II period. According to its history, The La Trobe University has been the symbol radical movements and progressive ideology. This has resulted largely from the student activism during the 1960s and 1970s.
The University offers a variety of courses in Arts, Humanities, Commerce and Science. La Trobe is well-known for its courses in arts and humanities. In the year 2014, the university has was given high rankings by QS world University rankings for its Arts and Humanity courses. Apart from being a verdant University, La Trobe is also a member of Innovative Research Universities in Australia.


Location

The biggest campus of La Trobe University is located in Melbourne, Australia. Besides, other campuses are located in Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Franklin Street, Collins Street, Shepparton, Mildura and Sydney.
The Melbourne campus is located in Bundoora suburb and is well-connected with regular bus service, train services and tram services. This will help you save a lot of money on transport. The Sydney campus of La Trobe is located at York Street and it is in the heart of the city.
Franklin street campus is also in Melbourne. You can easily reach the Mildura campus by car, bus or cycle. The Bendigo campus can be reached easily by public transport from Melbourne. The Shepparton, Albury-Wodonga and Collins Street campuses are also accessible by public transport.


Infrastructure

The main campus area of the La Trobe University measures 660 acres. It is a beautiful campus with waterways, parks and wildlife. While studying here you can enjoy many amenities like restaurants, bars, shops, art gallery and a bank. You can also have fun at recreational areas like gyms, indoor stadium, pools and play areas.

The La Trobe University research and development park consist of Institute of medical research, Victorian state forensic research, Rio Tinto group research centre, Environment Protection Authority, Research centre for Vaccine technology and a Bioscience centre.
The Bendigo campus has Heyward library, La Trobe rural health school and a Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities. The Albury-Wodonga campus has a Freshwater research centre. The Franklin Street campus has the Research centre for Sex, Health and Society. The Collins street campus houses the centre for Clinical mental health services for children and adolescents.


Residing Options

The La Trobe University offers on-campus accommodation at the main campus, Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga campus. There are residential halls for undergraduate students and University Lodge for postgraduate students and many self-contained apartments on campus. However, the on-campus rooms are very small but very clean and well-maintained.
The off-campus residing options include homestays and renting apartments. The La Trobe University helps students with off-campus accommodation as well. It is associated with many apartments’ real estate websites that can help students getting accommodation.
The University will also help you to prepare proper budget for accommodation and expenses. Also, if you are planning to live off-campus you must check the property thoroughly and sign a contract before paying the money.


Weather

The city of Melbourne where the main campus is located is known to enjoy four different seasons. The spring season is pleasant and enjoyable with rains. The summer season temperatures are around 28 degrees. The spring and the summer seasons are the best seasons to go the beaches of Melbourne. The winter season temperature is around 8 degrees. You can enjoy the winter season without worrying about the winter wear.


Faculty and pedagogy

Being the member of Innovative Research Universities, this university focuses more on research-based learning. The professors encourage students to participate in research in various fields apart from regular classes.
They are also active in solving queries or providing extra help to the students. They are also well-connected with students on online teacher-student networks. They also organise seminars and workshops to help students learn better. If you are willing to work hard your teacher is willing to work harder with you.

If you have any doubts regarding your career or don’t know what kind of jobs your degree can fetch, then you must visit the career centre on the campus. The career counselling is provided on all the campuses. If you are unhappy with your current course then with the help of counsellors at career centre you can choose the right course and career path for yourself. However, there is little assistance on job placements. However, the placement programme has its flaws. If you get placed through La Trobe then your package may be lesser compared to other Universities.


Crowd and campus life

The campus of La Trobe University is bustling with activities and events. There are students from diverse background studying with each other. The University is focused on helping the international students feel at home on the campus. They have a connect mentorship programme in which you meet a volunteer who will take you on campus tours and make you feel at ease. He or she will acquaint you with the campus life, events, student organisations etc.
La Trobe student organisations include psych club, breakfast club, community garden, Indian students club etc. There are events like potluck parties where students of different nationalities bring one dish from their country and share it with everyone. In this way, everybody gets to gel with each other and learn about each other’s culture. Also, the campuses are very safe, you can wear whatever you like and be comfortable.

    It is evident that this University is a beautiful place to study with good professors who encourage their students to do research. Indian Students will love it here as the weather is not too extreme. Once can enjoy good climate throughout the year. Further, the student life is also great with lots of events and celebrations. There are plenty of courses to choose from, and strong and robust infrastructure. Overall, the University is a great place to study but placements may be an issue. Hence, you must think wisely before you enrol in it.
