I am a currently studying at Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. My Program is Master's in Operations Research & Supply Chain Management (ORSC). ORSC is a 39 credit course, spread over an 18 month course duration (1.5 year) and is a STEM accredited program which allows an OPT extension up to 24 months. This means you may be eligible for up to three years of work in the United States without a work visa. (You can visit the U.S. government's website for more information on the official website.) I clearly remember the time when I was in the application process, and it was difficult for me to get inside information and contacts for this course at this university since there were few Indian students who have been through this course. Hence, I would like to share my experience and a brief introduction including: course related issues, living arrangements, on-campus and off-campus jobs and other program related FAQs. I hope this article will be helpful for any related issue and question pertaining to the school, program, life and so on. I also welcome students to send me private emails that contain program specific queries. I hope to provide all the information you need for making your journey at Case Western Reserve University as smooth as possible. If there is any question, please see our official website of our program. All the most official and updated information is on the official website.

Though Cleveland is a rather nice city even by itself, and you should find anything and everything you need right here, there are a number of places to visit even once you get out. Detroit and Pittsburgh are both 2-3 hours away by road, while downtown Cleveland is just a 20 minute walk away.

Located on the beautiful campus of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Weatherhead School of Management (WSOM) was established in 1952, and is a Private Business School in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is the second largest city after Columbus in Ohio, thus offering an advantage of City life and excellent connectivity to majority of the places, and a half an hour away from downtown. The CWRU community has a variety of transportation options such as Circle Link Route (Green Link/Blue Link), Commuter Shuttle, Evening Shuttles like North loop and South loop, etc. and all with wheelchair accessibility. While Detroit and Pittsburgh are both 2-3 hours away, it also offers a 3 hour journey to Niagara Falls. Few things to begin with on your wish list- Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame CWRU Farm Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall Cleveland Museum of Art Great Lakes Science Center Horseshoe Casino (‘our own little Las Vegas’) Major Leagues teams include the CAVS with Lebron James (NBA), the Indians (MBL), and the Browns (NFL) Playhouse Square - second largest theater district in the nation (CWRU provides tickets to plays, games etc. at discounted rates as well) Festivals like “Italian Festival” in little Italy in August and “Beer Festival” downtown Metroparks, National Park Lake Erie, beautiful lakeside park Cedar Point - the best roller coasters in the world!

Spread over 155 acres, CWRU really is quite a spectacular sight. Some state-of-the-art modernistic buildings complement the imposing ancient architecture, with a lot of greenery everywhere. The library system has over 3 million volumes, and the numerous research centers and laboratories are equipped with all sorts of high-end machines and innovations.

Featuring the sculptural profile, gleaming stainless steel siding, and gravity-defying angles that audiences have come to associate with the architect Frank Gehry, our building both sets our school apart and, quite literally, reflects our prestigious surroundings. Apart from the green campus with some state-of-the-art buildings and my course, I do boast about my school to other friends. The building has an area of approximately 150,000 square feet (14,000 m2) and stands five stories tall. The building's decentralized design was chosen so that, “Faculty offices, classrooms and meeting areas are distributed on every floor to encourage informal interaction and complement the Weatherhead School’s learner-centered curricula.” This little academic building Ohio has proven to be a masterpiece.

Residing Options

If you’re doing your Masters at Case Western, there’s a good chance that you’ll be living off campus, since that’s where most grad students end up. It’s cheaper, it’s more luxurious, and it certainly gives you far more privacy than living in dorms. Some of the popular areas students move into are Cleveland Heights, Little Italy, Cedar-Fairmount and Hessler. Of course, once you explore a bit, it’ll be clear which ones are affordable and which ones aren’t, but you can be sure of getting more-than-acceptable housing provided you’re willing to share an apartment (and thus also share the rent).

Supporting the statement made by Yocket - "If you’re doing your Masters at Case Western, there’s a good chance that you’ll be living off campus, since that’s where most grad students end up". Although the university is building housing residents for Graduate students, there's a high chance that you'll end up staying off campus if you're an Indian student. In spite of having a city advantage, there are places that offer housing as low as $250 per month and could go up to $2500 per month. You'd have more idea when you're here. Living expense per month could be anything around $500-$650 per month if you're willing to share your apartment. Places like Little Ital, Cleveland Heights and Fairhill are famous amongst Indian students.

Coming from India, you’re probably not going to like it too much. Yes, the snowy winters will appeal to you at first, but it can get terribly gloomy once the snow just refuses to stop. You’ll need a good supply of woolens, and some sturdy boots as well. Summers can get pretty hot and humid, though not too bad when compared to what you’ve probably seen already. But the worst part about the climate is definitely its unpredictability – weather forecasts are completely useless, you never know what to expect. Students say they get used to it eventually, and while they can’t exactly enjoy it, at least they learn to deal with it.

I wish the weather forecast could have been more accurate! "The snowy winters will appeal to you at first, but it can get terribly gloomy once the snow just refuses to stop." - True! You would definitely require a good supply of woolen and really sturdy snowshoes/boots here. It seems like the campus has its own wardrobe when you compare the pictures of Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring time. The temperature goes as low as -22 degree Celcius in winters and as high as... Does it matter? We Indian's are used to humidity and hot summers. The real feel here is usually lower than the actual temperature because of the lake effect - thanks to Lake Erie! However, you would get used to it once you're here and it is definitely a good experience to tease your body and adapt to such diverse temperature range.

Faculty and pedagogy

One thing that you can be sure of at Case is highly knowledgeable, dedicated and passionate professors. The university is involved in very high levels of research activity, and students get more than a fair chance to be part of it. Professors ensure that they encourage students and mentor them in a way that would never be forgotten. But you must bear in mind that the learning process isn’t ever one-way-traffic. Students need to take the initiative, make the first move, develop a rapport. Then you can sit back and watch as the brilliant faculty shapes your academic life into something very, very meaningful.

Professors at WSOM are passionate and highly knowledgeable. They encourage students and mentor them in excellent manner. My current class strength is of 42 [60% women] with an average age of 23 and 93% international students. Average full time work experience of the class is of 1.1 years (Range of 3 months to 2.5 years) with an average undergrad GPA of 3.4 on 4 pt. scale. I am having an excellent opportunity of International exposure since there are not many Indians in this program and the batch is quite diverse. My course is designed to expose the students with dual speciality - Operations Research and Supply Chain Management (which only few universities offer.) Apart from these - 9 credit hours (included in 39 credit hours) are taught from the business core which is the cherry on the cake. Green Belt Certification: The students in this course should complete a real industry project with companies in Northeast Ohio related in continuous improvement. The students who meet some GPA requirement and get A or B in Six Sigma will get a Green Belt Certification. SAP workshop: Each spring semester WSOM offers a three-week SAP workshop outside of class time for our students interested in learning more about the enterprise resource planning software - for free! Professors are easy to approach and the are very organized when it comes to course flow, course material and timeline of the entire program.

Financial aid

While it isn’t impossible, by any means, to get some strong scholarships, it’s made slightly difficult by the fact that CWRU is a private university. TAs and RAs are relatively simple to get, but you should aim at applying for (and being worth) some sort of financial aid.

CWRU being a private university is very generous with scholarships to those who deserve it and evaluates profile holistically and not just academically. WSOM offers merit-based scholarships. Important factors that are considered are GPA, test scores, pre-requisite grades, essay content, recommendation letter content, and interview. Ranges of scholarship can vary between 10% to 50%. In 2015, the average admitted student received 16% scholarship, 21% in 2016 year. So far for this 2017 year, the average scholarship given out has been nearly 30%. On campus jobs- TA: Teaching Assistant (Grader). Work for professors, take classes or correct answer papers and earn a minimum of $10/hr (Max. work limit is 20 hours/week). If you have the interest to teach some of the software skills you possess to your classmates and juniors, we welcome you to do so (with the permission of the professors; after reviewing the content and the slides) GA: Graduate Assistant Work with the admissions office to help future students. Assist admissions administrators and faculty with planning and carrying out events, including marketing promotion projects, collaboration projects with overseas higher education institutions and other assigned special events. Others: You can also find on campus jobs at the library, gym, dental, medical, law and business schools. CWRU has very few Indians, which makes life easier to find on-campus jobs.

Jobs and placements

Getting a job should never be a problem at such a good university, but getting the job you desire may not be as easy as you’d wish it was. That’s why it’s probably a good idea to get in touch with the career center early, and sit for as many interviews as possible. The more options you have, the better. And it’s also not a bad idea to keep your acads slightly respectable – you don’t want to be rejected because of your grades.

Crowd and campus life

The first thing that males will complain about, just like they did through four years of engineering in India, is the relative lack of women. Boys outnumber girls by more than two is to one, although the plight isn’t half as terrible as it may have been in an Indian engineering college. While it may not be completely effortless to randomly hook up at Case, it’s far from impossible. And one thing you can count on is the fact that you can find agreeable company to do whatever it is you may like doing. When we say that, we mean day-to-day activities, not the disgusting kinky stuff that might have popped up in your head.

  • Robert J. Herbold - Executive Vice President of Microsoft
  • Paul Buchheit - Creator of Gmail and 23rd employee of Google
  • Herbert Henry Dow - Founder of Dow Chemicals (The Company which caused The Bhopal Gas Tragedy)

It’s widely regarded as the next best thing to Mecca for Biomed students, and pretty good for most other courses too, which is why it should definitely be in your sights if you have an average profile.
