The California State Polytechnic University -Pomona, fondly known as the CPP or Cal Poly, is a public polytechnic university located in Pomona, California that was founded in 1938. It is one of two polytechnics in the California State University system. It utilizes a quarter-based academic calendar and it offers bachelor's degrees in 94 majors, 39 master's degrees, 13 teaching credentials and a doctorate. The Cal Poly counts with eight colleges including College of Agriculture, College of Business Administration, College of Education and Integrative Studies, College of Engineering, College of Environmental Design, College of Hospitality Management, College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences and College of Science. The university is part of a small group of polytechnic universities in the country which tend to be primarily devoted to the instruction of technical arts and applied sciences. Location

The California State Polytechnic University –Pomona is located at the Temple Avenue in Pomona, California which is located in the eastern portion of Los Angeles County. The campus borders the Kellogg Drive and the San Bernardino Fwy. The campus is located about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. its setting is suburban, even though is not located in the heart of a city it has the necessaries stores near campus to ensure that students can buy their daily needs like the Cal Poly Pomona Farm Store, Vic's Bike Shop and Stater Bros. Markets.


Infrastructure

The Cal Poly Pomona campus size is 1.438 acres, making it the second largest in the California State University system. The campus is surrounded by the city of Chino Hills to the south, the San Gabriel Mountains to the north, Interstate 15 to the east and the Interstate 605 to the west. The Cal Poly Pomona has over 120 buildings and they all vary in age and style. The main campus is surrounded by beautiful green areas. The campus includes recreation areas, bookstore, student lounges and food services like The DEN by Denny’s, Subway, Jamba Juice Cal Poly Pomona BRIC and the Einstein Bros Bagels. The Mission Revival Kellogg Horse Stables and the Kellogg House are very important buildings on campus with a Spanish colonial architecture of Southern California. Also, the Cal Poly Pomona University Library has a modern box-like structure along with the contemporary dormitories, engineering and Science and library-expansion facilities. Another important building would be the Collins College of Hospitality Management which is located atop Horsehill, this building is a hotel, a conference center and home of the student/faculty-run Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch. It is also worth to mention the beautiful gardens the university has. Cal Poly Pomona's George and Sakaye Aratani Japanese Garden is one of the four under management by institutions of higher education in the County of Los Angeles, the others being at UCLA and the Cal State Dominguez Hills.


Residing Options

The on-campus housing options at Cal Poly Pomona are located within easy walking distance to the academic buildings, library, computer labs, dining areas, the Bronco Student Center and parking lots. The residence Halls available include Alamitos Hall, Aliso Hall, Encinitas Hall, Montecito Hall, these four halls have a similar design and layout and they all offer a laundry room, study areas, recreation room/TV lounge, and community kitchenettes. Other housing options are the Cedritos Hall and Palmitas Hall which are very similar to the 4 halls mentioned before, the only differences are the room shapes and the slightly smaller common area. The Halls at Cal Poly Pomona are not separated by the year of course like most of the universities. However, is important to highlight that 90% of students from the Cal Poly Pomona live off campus.


Weather

Pomona, California has an average temperature of 63°F. The warm season is really hot and arid from June to September and the average temperature is 87°F, but on the hot summer days it can reach over the 92°F. The cold season is usually long, cool, and partly cloudy, the annual low temperature is 50°F and winter lasts from November to the first week of March, but it rarely goes lower than 43°F, so if moving to Pomona is on your mind, don’t worry about the cold days since there are no extreme temperatures, Pomona is usually sunny and warm like Los Angeles.


Faculty and pedagogy

The learning experience at Cal Poly Pomona is really good. Students claim that professors are amazing, make class entertaining and care about your success, besides the school offer a lot of practice in the area you are majoring on to make sure students are ready to start on the field. Also, many students like that the courses are well structured and that professor will have you “learning by doing”. It is also worth to mention that the university offers a bunch of opportunities as alumni.


Financial aid

The Cal Poly Pomona Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships mission is to provide financial assistance to students and families in support of reaching their academic goals. The university has 6 types of aids including Scholarships, Grants, Federal and Work Study, Loans, Bronco Scholarship Application (BSA) and California Middle Class Scholarship the last one Tuition reduction program for California residents. When it comes to the Grants there are two federal Grants and eight Grants offered by the University which are awarded based on GPA, substantial financial need, the state and graduate needs. On the other hand, there are two Federal Loans, a Private Loan and the California Dream Loan which offers a low interest rate and is guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Education. Now, Scholarships are offered through Cal Poly Pomona as well as several organizations, businesses and community groups that are external to the university. Cal Poly Pomona does not have a Scholarship for International students; however, they offer a list of private organization that provides scholarships for no US citizen like the Conference Travel Grants Scholarship, the Charles F. Scott Fellowship, the Google Lime Scholarship Program, the Graduate Opportunity Fellowship Program, the Lmsa-National Scholarship For U.S. Medical Students and much more.


Jobs and placements

The career center from Cal Poly Pomona assists students with career planning, choice of major, and student employment including full-time career, part-time on and off-campus. The university has an online job board containing on-campus, part-time, full-time, internship, co-op and volunteer opportunities named HandShake, it also provides access to the Career Center events like career fairs, workshops and information sessions. The Career Center also provides information for internships and off-campus jobs and assist students with all the requirements they need to apply. Life after graduation for Cal Poly Pomona alumni could be very sweet; the university has been named one of the best values in higher education by PayScale.com, the largest online database of salary. Based on mid-career median salaries, Cal Poly Pomona placed 130th overall out of the 1000 colleges and universities in the United States. Verdict

The Cal Poly Pomona is in fact not one of the best known universities from California, but it is certainly underrated, the university has a beautiful campus if you are a lover of nature, the professors are great and experience, there are abundant resources to get you graduated on time and successful in your future endeavors and it offers highly ranked programs for an affordable price. If you want to major on an engineering programs don’t doubt in applying.
