Founded in 1876, Royal Military College of Canada is a non-profit public higher education institution located in Kingston, Ontario. The University has its branch campus in Saint-Jean sur Richelieu. The Royal Military College of Canada is situated in the urban setting of the large town of Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Overlooking the city is the entrance to the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. The city is known for its historic properties. There are several heritage sites such as National Historic Sites, World Heritage Sites, Provincially Significant sites, municipally designated and heritage properties.
The city features an efficient transport system comprising of railways, city shuttles as well as taxis. Several ferry service operates between Wolfe Island and downtown Kingston. Seasonal ferry service from New York, Cape Vincent, through Wolfe Island, into downtown Kingston offers an alternate route to and from the United States. In addition, there are several shopping malls, stores, and restaurants spread across the city.
Royal Military College of Canada has a mix of historic buildings and more modern academic, athletic, and dormitory facilities. One such facility is the University’s Library which consists of about 250,000 books, 1,800 audio-visual items and 1,200 periodicals in both English and French. The library possesses The Universities historical material such as cadet photographs, scrapbooks, collections, diaries, and letters. RMC offers modern day facilities for sport, religious activities, housing, and health care; as well as facilities for social and recreational activities.
RMC provides the only on-campus residence with exception to students enrolled in the College's distance learning programme. The University has six dormitories, which are quite similar to most universities and provide the basic necessities. These dormitories are co-educational with separate washrooms for men and women. Officer Cadets share a room in the first year, and sometimes in the succeeding years depending on the availability of space.
In Kingston, the summers are usually comfortable; while the winters are freezing and windy. Over the course of the year, the temperature usually varies from 12°F to 77°F and is rarely above 83°F or below -7°F.
Royal Military College has a faculty to student ratio of 1:5, comprising of 520 students of which 236 are full-time and 284 are part-time. The University is well known for its very small enrolment range of 500-999. This low faculty to student ratio facilitates excellent classroom interaction. At Royal Military College of Canada education is free for most on-campus undergraduates as a result of commitments of military service after graduation; these Officer Cadets also receive an additional monthly salary. After graduation, these Officers are to give two months of service for each. RMU also provide funding to support civilian students, who are eligible for admission to the University’s masters and doctoral programs to work alongside graduate students who are members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Officer Cadets who enter the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) are registered in either the Regular Forces under the Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP) or the University Training Plan for Non-Commissioned Members (UTPNCM), or in the Reserve Forces under the Reserve Entry Training Plan (RETP). All officer cadets registered in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are subject to the CAF Code of Service Discipline, and as members of RMC's Cadet Wing, officer cadets are also subject to Cadet Wing Instructions (CADWINS). These orders and instructions regulate life at RMC and all cadets are required to both observe and impose them.
Cadet life at the College consist mainly of four components; Academic, Bilingualism, Military, and Athletic. A Unit Environment is also integrated into the four components to enable Cadets exposure to CAF Unit's Processes and Policies. Time and priority management coupled with work/life balance are developed from the synergistic requirements of a Cadet to maintain a high standard in all of these four components while accepting leadership roles that are part of a Unit Environment. These components and skills are developed over four years to produce RMC’s mission goal: commissioning Officers Well Educated.
RMU’s campus is on the shore of Lake Ontario and has easy access to two lake-front parks where students can relax. The University has a wide range of student clubs and organizations including: Arts, Astronomy, Broomball, Cheerleading, Chess, Climbing, Cycling, Debating, drama, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Expedition, Fish & Game, Flying, golf, Judo, Juggling, Outdoors, Paintball, Photo, Video Editing, War Games, rowing, Social Dance, Stage Band, Triathlon/Running, Water Polo, Windsurfing, yachting, and Women's Rugby. The RMU Athletics Program provides opportunities for all officer-cadets to participate in physical activities and sports that are mentally demanding to develop their overall physical capabilities, self-confidence, and leadership. The campus is a 10 minutes’ walk from the city’s downtown and has a small retail store in Yeo Hall for personal articles, souvenirs, snacks, and dry cleaning.
