The precursor of the Dublin City University, the National Institute of Higher Education was established in 1975. This was improved and expanded to be named as the Dublin City University in 1989.
Approximately there are 17 000 students and 640 staff. The DCU comprises the DCU Business school, Faculty of Engineering and Computing with 3 schools, Faculty of Humanities and Social sciences with 7 schools, DCU Institute of Education with 6 schools and the Faculty of Science and Health with 6 schools. Online courses are given via the DCU Connected online education and around 1200 students are presently enrolled. The university has 5 campuses; the main campus at Glasnevin, Sports campus (St. Clare’s), Innovation campus and St. Patrick’s campus.

The Dublin City University Business school is located in the main campus of the university at Glasvenin about 5 km away from the city center. This is an urban campus in a38 hectare land. The campus is serviced by 19 different bus routes.
There are 3 research centers at the school; The Irish Center for Cloud Computing and Commerce, the DCU Center for Family Business and the DCU Leadership and Talent Institute.
The DCU library at the Glasnevin campus caters to the; learning and educational needs of business, nursing, sciences, maths, engineering, law and government and communication students. There is a wide range of study spaces to suit all needs; quiet individual study, open spaces for collaborative work and study rooms with plasma screens and white boards for presentation preparation. There is a lounge area for relaxation on the ground floor. The Math Learning C nte and the Academic Writing Center are other important resources available to the students.
The campus is self sufficient. It has everything a student would want, such as a bank, a creche, a bookshop, a hairdresser, the Healthy Living Center, The helix, the Inter Faith Center, the Memorial garden, a Pharmacy, a print shop, restaurants, cafes and the DCU Sports.
At the main campus at Glasnevin there are number of restaurants and cafes. The Main Restaurant with seating for 500 people and the 1838 club with the Seed Room with facilities to accommodate up to 60 people, the Staff Dining Room with a seating capacity of 200, the Long Room which can seat around 139 people, the Lounge which can accommodate around 70 people are much popular in the community.
Student accommodation is provided at the Dublin City University in the heart of the campus. Single bed rooms with shared kitchen facilities are given with free WiFi, launderette services and a 24 hour security. One can cook or obtain food from a number of restaurants and cafes within the campus.
There are off campus housing options. Homestay is the most popular housing option with over 700 host families registered with the university. Here the student would live as a member of an Irish family. Single and twin rooms are available.
The off campus housing is available at Gateway Student Village which is 1.2 km away from the campus. By walking it is only 12 minutes. The residences are modern and well maintained. It provides single bed rooms with shared kitchen and other facilities. Required utensil for cooking are provided. Free WiFi, 24 hour security and launderette facilities are other benefits. As the campus is close by food could also be obtained from many cafes and restaurants at the campus.
The summers are comfortable in Dublin. The winters are long, very cold and wet; and its is windy and partly cloudy the year round. The yemperature vary between 38°F and 67°F. It rarely goes below 30°F or above 72°F.
The DCU has very active employment oriented programs. Over 90% of graduates were employed or pursuing higher studies within 6 months of graduation. Each year over 150 postgraduates complete business practicums or consultancy projects for the industry.
The Careers Service provide: Careers Quick Query Clinics, Careers How To guides, Online Jobs board, Skills sessions on interviews, job applications, successful net working and transition to the work place, and One-to-one/group career guidance and career planning, Mentoring program, career fairs and events and, online psychometriic/aptitude tests. The careers service dedicate their services to the student from day one, graduation and beyond. A career path based on qualifications, interests, abilities and aspirations would be created by the careers service for the student.
