The history of the Dublin Institute of Technology goes back to 1887 when the foundations for the City of Dublin Technical schools were laid. It gained status as an autonomous degree awarding institution in 1992. At present with over 20,000 students and a staff of 2500 it is the largest provider of part time education in Ireland. These include awarding of Bachelors degrees, Honors degrees, Higher certificates, Postgraduate diplomas, Master’s degrees, Professional Body awards and certificates of completion. The DIT offers over 200 undergraduate, over 200 postgraduate and over 150 part time programs. The college is ranked within the Top 4% of universities internationally. It is reported that 10 % of all students in higher education in Ireland study at DIT. Times Higher Education (THE) has ranked it among the Top 100 university level education institutes worldwide under 50 years.
There are 5 colleges namely; College of Business, College of Arts & Tourism, College of Engineering & Built Environment, College of Sciences & Health and Graduate Research School.

The DIT College of business is located at Aungier Street. The DIT has multiple campuses in different locations around the city. By 2020 all campuses would be relocated in a single campus at Grangegorman.
By 2020 the campuses scattered around the city of Dublin would be relocated in a single area, a 73 acre land in the heart of the city in Grangegorman. It is expected that around 20,000 students and 2,500 staff would be brought onto this single site.
Currently there are 6 libraries attached to the DIT, namely Aungier Street library, Bolton Street library, Cathal Brugha Street library, Grangegorman library, Kevin Street library and the Rathmines library. The libraries are a repository of key E-resource such as databases, E-journals, E-books, [email protected], Digital Skills & Research Hub, ResearchSmart, Exam papers, other libraries and job space.
The DIT envisages building a fully fledged Digital campus that would provide tools to access deeper learning and to all institutional services. The Information & Communication Technology Services is to provide required technological resources towards this vision through the powerful, secure and future oriented electronic infrastructure the DIT possesses currently. The Learning, Teaching and Technology Center is a Hub for transformative educational practice and scholarship providing e-learning, academic development and learning transformation tools.
By 2020 the DIT would have established residences with 6 bed and 3 bed apartments to private studio/family units for student accommodation at Grangegorman campus. Until then the DIT has an arrangement where they have reserved 15 apartment complexes with rooms and shared facilities. In 15 different locations within the city.
The summers are comfortable in Dublin. The winters are long, very cold and wet; and its is windy and partly cloudy the year round. The temperature vary between 38°F and 67°F. It rarely goes below 30°F or above 72°F.
The DIT offers a variety of scholarships and grants for deserving students, as it believes fees and other financial issues should not stand in the way of any one trying to achieve learning goals. Some of them are DIT MBA Program Scholarships, DIT College of Business Scholarships and Centenary Scholarships for International applicants.
There are many Grants such as the College Finance, Student Grant, Maintenance Grant scheme and Higher Education Grants.
The personal and career progression of the graduate is the key aim of the Leadership program. The DIT Career Development Center enhances these with their services which include one-to-one career development sessions aimed at empowering the strategic, long term career goals, provision of workshops covering topics such as personal branding and career planning by the coaching staff and assistance and guidance on a change of roles within the current company position or a career change.
The school maintains extensive links with the industry and has a strong alumni base which are powerful resources in career development programs.
The Network is the DIT alumni networking association which was established in 1997. It has a membership of over 90 000 worldwide. This enables numerous social and professional networkingbenefits including e-network online newsletter, access to the Linkedin and Facebook pages, free reference access to DIT libraries, discounts to Fit2Do gym, further studies and health insurance.
The DIT MBA ensures that the graduates are equipped with not only the latest in management thinking, but more importantly, the tools needed to apply this thinking to their work. The smaller class size ensures personal attention so important for international students. It is important that the DIT College of Business provides a career focused learning in a traditional university academic environment. The DIT MBA program encompasses a triple helix intertwining the individual, business and the society, so vital in present day context of social responsibility.
