Location

Adelaide is located between sandy beaches in the west and hills in the east. Therefore, you get to have the best of both the worlds. When it comes to transportation you will have no problem, as there are plenty of buses, trams and trains to get you around in the city. Also, if you know cycling it is an added advantage since you can curtail transportation costs.

Infrastructure

Presently Flinders University has three major campuses – the North Terrace Campus, Bedford Park Campus and a newly built campus at Tonsley. The newly made campus at Tonsley comprises of a $120 million building where courses such as Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics are taught. The department of Medical Biotechnology has some of the world-class equipments to help you with your research.
If you are a researcher working on Nanoscale Science and Technology then you will be positioned in this particular campus as well. The campus in Bedford Park can be easily referred to as a tourist attraction because of its spaciousness and the oh-so breathtaking view. You will also get a glimpse of Flinders in Victoria Squares, situated at the centre of the city.
You also get to enjoy a vast collection of books and digital files in the university’s library and in case you do not have your own laptop. You can easily log into one of the computers in the library and study.

Residing Options

On campus, accommodation is the mostly preferred type of stay here since you get all the amenities and get to mingle with both national and international students. Usually, the rooms are smaller for freshers although there is pretty much everything that you need there. The University Hall offers you around fifteen meals per week which can be beneficial for you if you are swimming in a bunch of assignments or do not know how to cook. But we all know that university food is seldom appetizing, so if you have enough cooking skills, it’s a big plus for you.
However if you are the sort who prefers space and solitude and wouldn’t want any disturbance while studying, then you should look for off-campus accommodation.

Weather

In Adelaide, thanks to the Mediterranean climate, you will get to experience all the four seasons, which means you need to have ball kinds of clothing in your suitcase starting from raincoats to warm woollen sweaters and jackets. And, do not forget to include plenty of summer wear because you will need that on the beaches. Sometimes the weather might be very unpredictable, so be mentally prepared for all kinds of climate.

Faculty and pedagogy

Although most of the teachers are friendly and approachable, at the end of the day you are responsible for getting that A grade in your exams.

Financial aid

If you have a good enough academic record, then it would not be hard for you to get any of the scholarships that you apply for here. You have the Youth Allowance and the Abstudy (people above 25). Make sure that you have a solid GPA; otherwise, you would have to resort to student loans.

Jobs and placements

If you are on good terms with the faculty and other staff members of the university, then it would be a surprisingly easy task for you to get your dream internships and recruitment in places that you want to work.

Alumni

  • Don Russell – previously the Australian Ambassador in the United States
  • Zoe Bettison – State politician of South Australia
  • Anthony Maras – Film Director, Producer and writer
  • Eddie White – Animation Writer, director
  • Mathew Liptak – Adelaide Crows footballer
  • Rodney Books – Professor at MIT

  • Verdict

If you want something different other than the States, like a less hyped nation which will allow you to study and travel both, then you should consider Flinders. However, remember that Australia is one of the most expensive countries in the world and Indian students without enough financial resources will have a hard time surviving here.
