Spread across a sprawling 422 acres, the college has an urban setting to it and also has one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States. It is located on the lush hills of Tallahassee in the coastal state of Florida. The university is situated very close to the Bragg Memorial football stadium and is easily accessible by road.
The campus of FAMU houses 132 buildings, each of which serves a specific purpose. Amongst these 132, 14 buildings hold historical importance. The university’s main building houses an administration office, a cafeteria and a library, the construction of which was undertaken on the donation of Andrew Carnegie. The Samuel H Coleman Memorial Library forms the main library of the institution, which serves students with many facilities, including study rooms, cafes, lounges and rooms for teleconference. The infrastructure of the university also offers students with recreational activities, which include a bowling alley, a ballroom, a salon and TV rooms to name a few.
For first-year students, whose families stay far from the university, FAMU allows them to reside on the campus. It also offers limited rooms for families of students who are dependent on them. Married students and those who start college at 21 are not eligible to avail of the housing facilities.
Tallahassee has a humid subtropical climate due to its coastal location, where it has longer summers. Summers are generally hot with brief rains. Thunderstorms do occur during the afternoons but that is once in some weeks. On the contrary, winters are cold, though ice and snow are rare phenomena, where the FAMU is located.
FAMU has a student-faculty of 15:1. With faculty members from different sections of academics, FAMU boasts of a varied staff, with long and experienced years of service. Faculty members specializing in Law, Journalism, Psychology, Agricultural studies, Engineering make sure students have access to them inside and outside the class as well. Studies here are taken seriously and faculty members do their best to impart the best of knowledge and education to their students at FAMU.
The Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University believes that paying for college should not be difficult and so 82% of their full-time undergraduates receive financial aid based on their need. They also get grants, awards and scholarships to pursue their studies. The average of this need-based financial aid turns out to be $6,105.
As FAMU offers other courses, apart from being the best in Agricultural and Mechanical studies, 65-70% of the students get placed in different jobs and careers, where they excel. A recent survey states that the percentage hasn’t gone considerably up, which despite being a low, is a welcome change. It also states that students, who want to get absorbed in jobs and careers and face the real world, need to start applying early on.
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University has a long and rich cultural and academic background, which makes it one of the best educational institutes across the globe. Now, with Forbes’ feather in its cap, it can boast of a better turnout. If one is on the lookout for an educational institute that offers an all round development along with best grooming and some fun-filled years of learning, FAMU is the place for them.
