IU, South Blend is located and named after the South Bend, Indiana in St. Joseph’s Country. The university is situated on a pedestrian mall on the river St. Joseph. South Bend is the fourth largest city in Indiana and, as such offers a plethora of options for entertainment and travel. It also features an Ignition Park, which is the technological hub to attract new industries.

Spread across 80 acres of urban land, IUSB started off with just two buildings- Greenlawn Hall and Northside Hall in early 1960s. However, during its rich history of more than 50 years, the university now has a total of eleven buildings. The highlight of the campus is its pedestrian bridge that connects the athletic field, located across the river with the main campus of the university. Students love spending their free time at this bridge along with their friends.
The Student Activities Center to the west of the university is where student orientation, fitness classes, meetings, exercising and athletics take place. The Fine Arts Center is home to classrooms for students pursuing arts-related courses. The Purdue Technology Building was completed in the year 1993 and is exclusively built with state-of-the-art facilities to provide an excellent learning experience to the students.
Wiekamp Hall has the largest number of classrooms in the entire campus and also has multiple cafeterias for students to grab a bite in between their lectures. The Franklin D. Schurz Library, located to the east of the campus was built in the year 1989 and is home to thousands of books and other reading materials that help students with their studies.
In case you are an international student looking for a place to stay on campus, IU- South Blend makes sure to take good care of you. IUSB has large rooms, spacious but expensive dormitories and big halls in the hostels and residential buildings for the students who opt to live on-campus. The newly constructed residential complex has a seating for about 400 students, in addition to the River Crossing Campus Apartments and other off-campus housing buildings.
The housing apartments are a short walk from the main campus across the pedestrian bridge. In addition, the path covers the Northside Hall and the Franklin D. Schurz Library. The housing community center is properly monitored by the South Bend Police Dept. 24*7. And oh yes, it offers free wifi, big screen TVs and computers too! There are some sketchy apartments available off campus but safety and high costs are an issue.
The city of South Bend, Indiana is situated on the banks of St. Joseph River and has a humid, continental climate, unlike the one you experience here in India. This climate is characterized by generally hot, humid summers and mild to cold winters. Proximity to the river as well as Lake Michigan has a lake snow effect on the winters, making rain and thunderstorms more often.
January is the coldest as well as the snowiest month with an average temperature of -1 °C, which can drop below 20 °C sometimes. The months June through August are the warmest ones with an average temperature of mild 21°C. The warm summers are pretty humid, though. Springs are usually overcast much like autumns; the moderate weathers are the result of closeness to Lake Michigan.

The faculty is recognized worldwide for their works, but this does not stop them from being humble. The professors take personal interests in the students’ academics and many a times guide students to help in their research projects also.
Don’t worry about it. IUSB makes sure that each needy student receives financial grants or scholarships of some kind or the other. As much as 86 percent of the qualified freshmen receive some kind of the financial aid. The average grant award for the need-based students is about $6,835. Among all the scholarship students, 74 percent are the full-time undergraduate students.
