Jackson State University (JSU) is a public historically black research university in Jackson, Mississippi. It is one of the largest HBCUs in the United States and the fourth-largest university in Mississippi regarding student enrollment. The university is a Thurgood Marshall College Fund member and is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
JSU was founded in 1877 as Natchez Seminary, a school for the education of African Americans. The school was renamed Jackson College in 1883 and moved to its current campus in Jackson in 1887. In 1974, Jackson College was renamed Jackson State University.
JSU offers more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university is also home to several research centres, including the Center for Health Disparities Research, the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and the Center for Sustainable Energy.
