Norrbottens l'n, Sweden
Lulea University of technology in Sweden is Sacndinavia’s northernmost university of technology. It is icy cold here. The university is known for the research it conducts in cooperation with companies like Bosch, Ericsson, Scania, LKAB, etc. The university has 1,600 employees and 15,000 students.
Lulea University is located at Lulea. So let us talk about the city.
The region of lulea has three shopping malls so there is limited shopping. There is Norrbotten museum where art exhibitions and concerts are exhibited. The area of Lulea has a lot of sports teams so if you like ice hockey, football or basketball then there are sporting events to enjoy.
Aside from this Lulea has limited offerings in terms of nightlife, concerts, events, etc. It is a small town and has limited options for entertainment. I suspect student life here will become boring very soon unless you love adventure sports, then this is the place to be.
The library has over 600 study areas. The library staff are very supportive and will give advice on writing a report or giving a presentation. The university also provides library services to the hospitals and research centres across Norrbotten. They have a student service centre where they help students in their daily problems as well as their studies.
They have indoor gyms and outdoor sport centres. There is a large range of training activities from underwater to on the ice. There is a lot of ways to exercise. The gym has over 90 training courses. There is personal training, squash, cardio cross, cross country skiing, etc. Some of the other sports include. Arm wrestling, Biking, fencing (which is a matrial arts where you learn to use swords.
Lulea University assists all students who pay tuition fees to find accommodations. The student service centre will help you find a place although wait times could be upto a month.
There are options to live in Kiruna. There are 75 apartments and dorm rooms available. You can live in Lulea as there are many furnished apartments and dorm rooms available here. Check this link for more information. In Pitea there are two student residential areas both within walking distance of the campus. There is also a housing company called Skebo that offers rooms and rental apartments in areas Älvsbacka, Sörböle and Anderstorpsvägen - all within walking distance to campus.
The winters here are very cold and with a lot of snow. The summer is mild compared to the standards of the rest of the world. There is rainfall during autumn and spring. Average temperatures in summer are 18 celsius and during winter it is -15 celsius. Please note that during winter there is only 4 hours of day light, and during summer the sun does not set for a long time. This type of climate can be very disorienting to students from other parts of the world. Needless to say you will need a lot of warm clothing.
The US news global education rankings placed Luluea at 335 globally. In rankings for Sweden Lulea was 12th. Its subject rankings were #257 for Engineering and #335 for Material Science. The student reviews are overwhelming positive. The students are very happy with their teachers, there seem to be a lot of productive discussions and a close knit student community.
As far as financial aid is concerned the The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students from many different countries. The scholarship covers both living costs and tuition fees. For students from the EU you do not have to pay any fees. For international students you will have to pay the full fees.
Each of the programs have their own placements. Certain programs will have their placements arranged by the university staff, like the nursing. Others are dependent on you to search. This is unfortunate, because it will be difficult for an international student to network and find work on their own.
There are a lot of outdoor activities for students. As there is a beautiful archipelago a lot of students venture out onto the sea, either by kayaking or during winter by skiing or on ice skates. Moreover as mentioned earlier cross country skiing is a big time pass in this region and there are numerous ski resorts in the area. You can even go hiking over the wild mountains. For students that love snowy outdoors this is heaven on earth.
The university also has its own nightspot called STUK. The nightlife is organised by the student union, so they arrange parties, picnics, etc. There are multiple student organizations where you can meet like minded people and enjoy your favourite activities. This is a big part of student life and it is good in this university.
Given the really cold climate, lack of sunlight, lack of necessary infrastructure, and its average score in the world rankings I would say to keep this university as your back up choice. Fortunately the student’s personal experiences are very positive so despite the weather, you can still enjoy yourself. Moreover the limited financial aid as well as the poor options for placements are also matters that make me say to keep this as a back up.
We would love to hear your experience and share it with the community
