The Memorial University of Newfoundland is a public university based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Established in 1925, Memorial University has six faculties in Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Medicine, and Science, and six Schools: Graduate Studies, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy, Human Kinetics, Recreation, and Social Work. The University offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and has the lowest graduate programs tuition fee in Canada. Memorial University has more than 18,500 students on four campuses with nearly 85000 alumni students around the world. The University has more than 30 research centers and received more than $100 million in research funding in 2016-17.

Its faculties have been recognized with numerous awards and honors for their meaningful contributions to society. Memorial University has four main campuses and two satellite campuses in Newfoundland and Labrador, and in two countries: Canada and England. Memorial’s main campus is located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. St. John’s is the capital and largest city in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the large Canadian island in Newfoundland. As Canada’s 20th-largest census metropolitan area, St. John’s is the seat of government and is home to almost 40 percent of the province's population. St. John's buildings have a different style from the rest in Canada, and its major buildings are remains of its history as one of the first British colonial capitals. The downtown area of St. John's is its cultural hub and is a major tourist destination in Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada as a whole. St. John's Water Street and Duckworth Street are known for their colorful low rise heritage buildings, housing numerous tourist shops, clothing boutiques, restaurants, and shopping malls. Metro bus Transit is responsible for public transit and has a total of 19 routes and 53 buses. There are three main grocery stores in St. John’s, offering a variety of food, fresh produce, clothing, and household items. Wal-Mart and Costco are also popular destinations for its residents.
Memorial University has a number of buildings and other infrastructures on campus. The University has Libraries in 6 locations with specialized resources, skilled staff and librarians, and an incredible wealth of information. The University provides ICT services such as free Wi-Fi and Computer labs. of Memorial University has a number of academic buildings; the Arts and Administration building, Science building, Chemistry, and Physics building, Mathematics, Music, Education, Physical Education, and the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation. The University Centre is home to the food court, bookstore, campus bar called Breezeway, and the Campus radio station. The Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden is one of a kind.
Memorial University students can choose to stay on or off-campus. The University provides on-campus housing at the St. John's campus in three residential complexes. The Paton College and Macpherson College are assigned to its Undergraduate students, while the Cabot Court in Burton's Pond Apartments is assigned to the University’s postgraduate students. On campus meal plan is compulsory for the undergraduate students and optional to the postgraduate students. The Paton College offers traditional dormitory-style accommodations for about 1000 students in nine residences, called "Houses”. Macpherson College consists of two halls: Shiwak Hall and Cluett Hall, which house 250 students each, and opened officially in 2013. The four "courts" of Burton's Pond apartments houses a total of 500 single students in four bedroom apartments, and provide a more independent lifestyle on campus. The Baltimore Court provides small family apartments for students with a family.
In St. John's, the summers are short and comfortable; while the winters are long, windy and freezing. Over the course of the year, the temperature usually varies from 19°F to 69°F and is rarely above 78°F or below 8°F.
Memorial University has a faculty to student ratio of 1:16, comprising of 1,330 academic staff and 18,204 students of which 13,564 are undergraduates and 3,774 are Postgraduates. This faculty to student ratio is one of the best in Canada. The small classroom size provides the students with an opportunity to learn in an enriching and welcoming environment. The University has a total of 2,474 Administrative staff.
Memorial University offers a number of scholarships and grants to its students. These scholarships are regularly awarded to outstanding students who show leadership and excellence in both their academic and extra-curricular lives. The University’s Scholarships, Awards, and Financial Aid Office administer entrance and undergraduate scholarships, bursaries and awards; and processes loan documents for students from the US and from other Canadian provinces. The number of students applying for scholarship far outweighs the scholarships and grants available, and prospective students are strongly advised to carefully plan their budgets in advance to ensure they have sufficient funding.
