About Miami University

Founded in the year 1809, Miami University is one of the best ranked coeducational public research universities in the Ohio region of United States. Even though the classes at this university didn’t begin until late 1824, it is still the tenth oldest university in the United States. The university stands at the 75th spot in the list of best universities and at the 2nd spot in the best undergraduate teaching at national universities list in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 edition.
It is also one of the original Public Ivy institutes whose education quality can be compared to that of the Ivy League. The public university offers more than 130 areas of study, around 60 areas for master’s degree along with 12 disciplines for doctoral programs

Location

The Miami University is located in Oxford, Ohio. The city is in the Miami Valley which is situated in the southwestern part of Ohio. For traveling around campus and Oxford, the students can travel free of cost in the Butler Country Regional Authority Buses. The SafeRide shuttle service is also an ideal mode of transport at nights.


Infrastructure

The campus of the Miami University is spread across 2,000 acres and is known as one of the most famous campuses in America. It is the university of choice for all the students in Oxford, Ohio and more than 70% of the students here take admission at this university. The university’s campus is home to William Homes McGuffey Museum which is a National Historic Landmark.
The university also offers its students with more than 30 dinning destinations on the campus itself. The dinning service of the university has won more than 50 awards since 2002. It also has a modern Recreational Sports Center with Olympic-sized swimming pool, 3 basketball courts, outdoor pursuit center fitness room, rock-climbing center, weight room and exercise classrooms.


Residing Options

All the first and second year students live on-campus and the university offers 35-theme based residing options known as LLC (Living Learning Communities). The idea behind these LLCs is to allow students to live with like-minded students. The university believes that this allows the student to have a better learning experience. Every LLC has its own hall government with representatives in student senate and Residence Hall Association.


Weather

The weather is not something that the students of this university need to worry about. The summers are not very hot and winters aren’t extremely cold either. January is generally the coldest month and the average temperature during this month is about 38 degree F. July is the hottest month and has an average temperature of 80 degree F. While the summer is generally not extremely hot, the students who come from colder countries can have a bit of a tough time.
The amount of snowfall is also not very high in Ohio and is generally received in the months from November to March. Mild rainfall can be expected throughout the year.


Faculty and pedagogy

The Miami University has a student-faculty ratio of 17:1. As the university is one of the eight original Public Ivy institutes, the faculty here is excellent. Some of them are directly from the Ivy League institutes and Nobel laureates who are continuing their research at the university. One thing that is common in all the professors is the fact that they actually want the students to learn and they will also go out of their way to help them. However, the students also need to show enough sincerity and dedication on their part.


Financial aid

At the Miami University, around 35% of the total full-time undergraduate students get some kind of financial aid in the form of grant award or student scholarship. The average of this financial aid is $8,750.

Being one of the most influential universities in US, the Miami University students are considered by some of the best of companies throughout the world. As per a recent survey, 97.6% of all the students who graduated from this university between August 2012 and May 2014 were already employed or again in school by the fall of 2014.
