The main campus of Mississippi State University is located partially in the town of Starkville, the county seat of Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, United states. It is centred on the main quadrangle historically used by the defence during World War 2. Having a population of 23,888, Starkville is a homely university town, of which MSU is the largest employer. Many major events in Starkville are supported by the MSU Student Body like Dudy Gras Parade, Cotton District Arts Festival, Super Bulldog Weekend, Old Main Music Festival and Bulldog Bash. Bikes are available for rent at Starkville. The bus rapid transit system of the town links the campus with the surrounding areas and the Golden Triangle Regional Airport is the closest airport.
Its setting is rural, and the MSU campus size is 4,200 acres and has over 160 buildings including ample green patches and eye-pleasing woodlands. The College of Engineering is on the east side of campus while the Arts and Sciences, including Computer Science, and the College of Architecture, Art, and Design (CAAD) are located in the north. Humanities department is found on the south side while MSU’s well-known Agriculture course is spread across the west of the campus. It has three eclectic art galleries having everything from paintings to sculptures to fabric exhibits. There is an interesting Clock Museum inside campus dating back to 1700. MSU has two state-of-the-art athletics facilities. The Mitchell Memorial Library in MSU holds over 2 lakh volumes of books including some of the rarest presidential papers.
On campus living offered by MSU includes almost 20 residential halls : Creswell Hall, Critz Hall, Davenport Hall, Hull Hall, Oak Hall, Ruby Hall, etc where the rent costs about $2000 to $4000 per semester depending on the facilities one chooses. Off-campus housing options may cost you about $400 to $600 per month. Popular off-campus residence options are DTN Management Company, Arbor Forest Apartments, Hunter’s Ridge and Campus Village. Overall, the cost of living in Mississippi is much lesser than in most states with relatively lower taxes.
In Starkville, the summers are long, hot, and muggy; the winters are short, cold, and wet; and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 35°F to 90°F and is rarely below 21°F or above 97°F. Summers can be scorching with the temperature rising up to 37 Degree Celsius. In winters, the temperature is rather mild and even rainy at times. The faculty to student ratio is 1:20, MSU offers 175+ programs culminating into Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees. Historically, MSU is known for its research work in Aeronautical Engineering. More recently, it is known for its spectacular research findings in computational engineering and design. Popular professors on campus are Jacob Tschume (Mathematics), Aaron Grimes (English) and Paul Cuicchi (Physics). Their mission is to foster a university culture where quality teaching and engaged learning is appreciated and practiced. The faculty development programs and service emphasize knowledge, techniques, and issues related to teaching and learning.
The average tuition fees at MSU are $21,000 per annum. There are various merit based scholarships for both domestic and international students. MSU provides $650 as financial aid to qualifying international graduate students and about $800 for undergraduate students. For both awards, one has to get an average GPA of 4.0 for getting the financial aid doubled in the coming semesters. There is a special scholarship of $12,000 available to deserving female students from foreign countries (also a loan amount of $12,000 to $20,000) and another one specifically for students from Belgium.
During the course, there are over 600 opportunities for co-ops.
