Since it’s inception in 1887, RMIT has undergone a lot of changes, which also include changes in architectural styles. This is evident in the buildings located in the city center of Melbourne. The RMIT campus blends in with the city, with most buildings concentrated in the northern portion of the city. City life is within walking distance and students can use this chance to explore the city and experience a completely new lifestyle.
On campus facilities include the Swanston Library on the city campus as well as various computer labs. The Swanston Library is one of the top 5 libraries in Melbourne. Students also have an access to a database of journals, research papers, e-books and other media. Students can take advantage of various artworks of Australian and international origins on display at the RMIT Gallery. RMIT schools also have galleries relevant to their courses and subjects managed by the schools themselves.
RMIT is focused heavily on research. The university works in partnership with various facilities to perform cutting edge research and work on new technology. Students have access to the following institutes:
Residing options for students include apartment complexes on or near the campus as well as residential colleges in the nearby areas. If you are thinking about renting a place off-campus, the university also has services to help you through the entire process. Everything from legal advice to a checklist about what to check before renting is available on RMIT’s website.
Pacifica Campus Apartments, RMIT Village, Student Housing Australia, Unilodge and Urbanest offer shared student apartments. Student hostel options, which allow you to live in wonderful student communities, are also a great option for living near campus.
Living and studying in Melbourne means you will learn to be prepared for changing seasons in the span of a day. The seasons usually range from a warm summer to a mild spring and autumn to a cool winter. January and February tend to be the hottest months of the year. If you are used to it being winter in the early months of the year, this will be a huge adjustment. Spring and Autumn tend to be pleasant and are the perfect seasons for outdoor activities.
Some of the most popular courses of study at RMIT include accounting, communication and media studies, computer science and information systems, education, psychology, law and economics. The University is divided into two divisions, one supporting higher education and the other supporting vocational education and training. 23 different schools offering areas of studies fall under these two divisions. Three academic divisions roughly divide these 23 schools that fall under these broad areas of studies:
Scholarships are available for all students. Students can apply for either merit based scholarships or research scholarships, based on their program of study. Scholarships geared especially for international students are also available at RMIT.
Students for certain south east Asian countries can apply for the International Development Scholarship. Research scholars can apply for grants and funding through RMIT’s scholarship page. Most scholarships are merit based therefore it becomes an important criteria for students who need financial aid.
The career center at RMIT has various programs to help students gain experience in the real world while they are still at RMIT. The Work Integrated Learning Program either places you in an internship related to your field, or partners students with industry organizations to work on projects.
The Global study and work program allows you to study abroad for a period of time or let you gain work experience for anywhere between tow weeks to six months. RMIT prepares students thoroughly before they graduate and step into the corporate world. The career development center also offers counseling for students to select the right program for them.
As an international student, these programs are a great way to explore different opportunities. But when you talk to a career counselor, you should also get information about what permits you might need as an international student. Employers might also prefer resident students for a lot of open positions. Start searching for jobs with enough time to find the right position for yourself.
The biggest advantage of studying at RMIT is the diverse student body. The wide array of courses for study and research available also make it an attractive choice for students in Australia or abroad. The school is quiet large and this might affect the student-faculty ratio in certain classes. It would be entirely up to you to make the effort to interact with a professor outside of class in case you need assistance. The urban location makes off-campus living just as expensive as on campus living. Do your research and talk to current students to find out how safe both living options is. Overall, it is a great university with widely acclaimed research opportunities.
