Saarland University was founded in 1948 in Homburg in co-operation with France and is organized in six faculties that cover all major fields of science. The university is particularly well known for research and education in computer science, and some other fields such as computational linguistics and materials science, consistently ranking among the top in the country in those fields. The university consists of six faculties: Faculty of Human and Business Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Humanities, and Faculty of Law.

The Saarland University is located in Saarbrucken which is the capital and largest city of the state of Saarland, Germany. Saarbrucken was created in 1909 by the merger of three towns, Saarbrücken, St. Johann, and Malstatt-Burbach. Saarbrucken was the industrial and transport center of the Saar coal basin. Historic landmarks can be found in the city. These include the stone bridge across the Saar (1546), the 18th-century Saarbrucken Castle, the Gothic church of St. Arnual, and the old part of the town, the Sankt Johanner Markt (Market of St. Johann). The city is home to several teams, most notable of which is association football team based at the Ludwigspark stadium. In the past a top-flight team, twice the country's vice-champions, and participant in European competitions, the club draws supporters from across the region. Lower league SV Saar 05 Saarbrucken is the other football team in the city. The Saarland Hurricanes are one of the top American football teams in the country, with its junior team winning the German Junior Bowl in 2013.
The Saarland University has a number of buildings on campus. It is a multiple-campus university comprising 3 main sites in and around Saarbrucken: Campus Alt-Saarbrucken, Campus Rotenbuhl, and Campus Gottelborn. Campus Alt-Saarbrucken houses the School of Engineering, the School of Social Sciences, the Department of Civil Engineering as well as the Franco-German Institute for Technology and Business (ISFATES-DFHI). Campus Rotenbuhl is home to the Business School. The School of Architecture is located on the Campus Gottelborn.

And Saarbrucken also boasts a great range of cafes, bars, and parks, where students can hang out and relax.
