It is situated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the campus can be seen on Scott’s Bluff facing the Mississippi River in the northern part of the city. The university offers free transportation to its students and so one need not worry about having one’s own car to get to college. Although students can be seen driving to school in their cars, they are allowed so only after their first year. Otherwise, one can avail buses to get round the campus.
The campus of the Southern University and A&M College is spread across 964 acres with an urban setting and the university is known for being the largest HBCU in Louisiana. The Lake Kernan can be seen flowing through the center of the campus. 1960 onwards buildings stretching over more than 2,000,000 square feet have been set up and some of these buildings include Music Recital Hall, SU Law Center, T.T. Allain College of Business and SU Museum of Art.
The other buildings like F.G. Clark Activity Center have room for theater, conferences, convocations, athletic tournaments, and other activities pertaining to entertainment. The Smith-Brown Memorial Union is an important hub for extracurricular activities in the campus. The recently redecorated Union has barber and beauty shops, 12 lanes for bowling, a room to play billiards, an art gallery, a ballroom and plenty of other rooms for various purposes including the 6 food court with well-known food outlets.

The University is home to the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies (CEES), Center for Social Research and International Center for Information Technology and Development.

The 154,000 square foot library named after the John Brother Cade has four floors and a seating capacity of 1400. With over 200 computers, nearly a million volumes, more than 2,000 journals, a notable collection of documents, recordings, microforms, and videos, the library is indeed impressive. It houses the Camille Shade African American Collection, Archives, and Music Listening. The library website has more than 100 databases. The Library Learning Resource Center and the new Information Technology Center are the frequented places by patrons.
The Magnolia Room, the Cypress Room, and the Oak Room in the E.N. Mayberry Dining Hall is meant for the dining of students. The students are provided dorms to live in although they are small, most of them do not have a hard time living here.
The most convenient off-campus housing is the Palisades at Jaguar City which is located near Southern University. The apartments are furnished, have nice interiors, good parking space and amenities like a laundry room, dishwasher and more. Students can also find good 1 to 4 bedroom apartments at Baton Rouge, LA. Some options include Sterling Burbank Apartments, Tiger Plaza, Stadium Square and The Villas on Brightside with a monthly rental of $700-$ 1200.
The weather is pretty unpredictable in Louisiana and one day you may get snow and the next day there would not be even a hint of it.And, since it rains often and flooding occurs students are extra careful during those times. Grads are contented with the job placements and packages offered.
