The University of Maine, which is also popularly known and referred to as UMaine was established way back in the year 1865 as a land grant college and is a flagship University established under the University of Maine system. Maine University is the largest public research University in Maine, United States. The University of Maine enjoys a good location. An interesting fact about this University is that UMaine is the only Land Grant University which is situated on an island. This richly diverse University lies on Marsh land, lying between the rivers Stillwater and Penobscot. Part of this campus is also situated on a hill top which makes UMaine all the more appealing to students because of its unique location.
The campus of this University stands on 660 acres of land which becomes a ‘home away from home’ for more than 10000 odd students. The campus has a good 37 academic buildings, 30 administrative buildings, 17 halls of residences, 4 dining facilities, 18 subject related specific laboratories, 5 museums, 10 sport houses, 14 Greek life houses etc. Apart from this, the campus is also well endowed with a café, a pub, an art recreation center, a fitness club, and two convenience stores and so on. The original plan of the campus was conceptualized by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, who was the person responsible for designing the famous Central Park in New York as well as the White House grounds in Washington.
The Department Of Residence Life is in-charge of allocating dorms to the new entrants of the University. With almost 17 halls of residences available to students, a sizeable portion of the student population gets accommodated on campus. For undergraduate students, there are the conventional halls of residences. For upperclass residents, graduates, there are suite style rooms. Some of the halls of residences include, Oxford, Cumberland, Hancock, Patch, Somerset, Gannette, York, Penobscot, Stodder etc.
The University of Maine provides wide variety of accommodations for students wishing to stay off-campus. Some of the options which you can try finding an accommodation are Orono especially at 165 Kelly Road, 34 Penobscot St. Apt, 92 Orono Landing Road, 67 College Avenue or at 751 College Avenue, 137 Front St. Apt, 10 High Street, 103 Fourth Street, 183 Main Street, 26 Oak Street in Old Town etc. While the cost of each one may vary, on an average, however, these accommodations are priced at around $500.
The state of Maine enjoys a humid continental climate. While the summers are warm (although not very hot) but humid, winters here are cold and snowy and this weather is more or less the same throughout the state. However, it is only the northern part which experiences comparatively greater amount of snowfall as compared to the rest of the states. The highest temperature recorded in this state is around 41 degrees Celsius which is in July, while the lowest is around -18 degrees Celsius in the month of January.

Financial aid includes any and all kinds of scholarships, grants, Federal Work-Study, loans etc.
The University of Maine awards as many as ten Research Assistantship jobs to its students every year. Each student who becomes a research Assistant gets a stipend of $14,600 for a period of nine months. In addition to this, Research Assistants also get entitled to partial waiver of the tuition fees for the summer semester as well as to some health benefits as well. However, such Assistantship jobs are usually awarded on merit basis and eligible candidates need to get nominated from their respective departments.
UMaine figures as one of the desired Universities which employers seek to tap when it comes placing students. The University’s ultimate goal of providing top quality education to all its students makes it an ideal source for placing candidates. Hence, even in the current scenario, it was observed that in 2014, as many as 60 companies visited UMaine campus with the intention of hiring their students and this number increased to a good 100 in the following year 2015. The University of Maine Alumni Association takes care of maintaining relations with every single alumnus who has graduated from the University. This office is an evident representation of the common bond which every alumnus who has passed out of the University shares with the other alumni as well as the University.
