Started as a school for agricultural training and a school of mining, University of Alaska grew quickly and widely. Founded in 1917, classes officially began at the Alaska Agricultural School with just six students. Now with nine colleges to its name and a student body comprising of more than eleven thousand students, the University has grown tremendously.
By 1935, the school had been officially renamed to University of Alaska and had included other courses such as science, engineering and arts by this time. One of the most unique facet of the university is the operation of the Poker Flat Research Range which is the only known university operated rocket range in the world!

This university at Fairbanks is the first of the UoA institutions that was established. It is located in Tanana Valley in Fairbanks, Alaska. With nine colleges that is spread across the campus, the university is centrally located to suit all its needs. Most of the students who opt to study here prefer to stay in the campus.
This university at Fairbanks, as on date provides over 180 courses in more than 120 disciplines of study. Hence, in order to provide its students with the best of academic and related facilities, the university is well equipped with the entire infrastructure. To begin with, there are two libraries which the This university at, has. One is the Elmer E. Rasmuson while the other is Keith. B. Mather library. The former is considered to be the largest library in the state of Alaska housing more than one million books, journals, periodicals etc. the Mather library is basically a science library consisting of exhaustive collection of books on Global Change, UAF Atmospheric sciences etc.
Besides libraries, the university is entrusted with research to be conducted on over 90 percent of the UA system. For this purpose, the university has plenty of research facilities like the Geophysical Institute specializing in research in aeronomy, seismological and volcanologic research; the International Arctic Research Center which undertakes an exhaustive study on the dynamics of Climate Change; the Institute of Arctic-Biology which focuses on high latitude biological systems; the Institute of Northern Engineering which undertakes research in the allied branches of engineering and so on.
University of Alaska has a lot of options available for those who wish to stay on campus. The residence halls are fully equipped with the students’ comforts in mind. It doesn’t rain a lot but one of the main hazards during the winter months is the ice fog that becomes quite common. Students who are not used to such extreme climates should be well prepared to face it especially the winter months.
The student-teacher ratio of the university is 11:1. Some of the most intelligent minds are a part of the faculty. With world-renowned research institutes, the student ratio is quite low for each class and this makes the system a lot more personal and interesting.
To ensure that the students can pursue their interests and research, the niversity offers financial aid as well as scholarships to those who deserve. They offer assistantships, grants, loand and scholarships for various programs and courses. The average scholarship that is offered is around $6,262 and more than fifty two percent of the students have some form of financial aid to help with their education.
The university provides all its full time graduate students with different Teaching as well as Research Assistantship jobs under which students are supposed to put in 20 hours of work for which they receive a fixed stipend and couple of other benefits. Based on the level of qualification which the candidate possesses, his or her stipend will be determined accordingly. Like for example, for a Ph.D. student, the minimum bi-weekly rate is somewhere around $690 while for a Masters student it is $630. Besides this, such a candidate also becomes entitled to health insurance as well as for waiver of his or her tuition fees.
Since it is a research university, the placements offered in the diverse field of studies are relatively medium as it depends on the topic and type of research that is done. The salaries offered however are very high as compared to the other fields of study.
