About University of Auckland

The University of Auckland was established in 1883 as Auckland University College. It is a public university located in the country's largest city, Auckland and it is also known as the largest university in New Zealand. The university is made of eight faculties; these are spread over six campuses. About 40,000 students and more than 30,000 full-time equivalent students attend the university.

It is the highest ranked university in New Zealand, being ranked 81st worldwide in the 2016/17 QS World University Rankings. It is also the only university included in the Times Higher Education top 200 and the highest ranked New Zealand university in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities. It is officially accredited by the Ministry for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, New Zealand.

    Location at University of Auckland

    The University of Auckland is located in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand. The university's City campus is situated right in the heart of Auckland, you are within walking distance of all main cultural, entertainment, and commercial hubs. The Tamaki innovation campus is located in the east of Auckland suburb of St Johns, it is mainly a postgraduate campus with courses in biosecurity, population health, and speech science. There is also a University bus that runs regularly between the Tamaki campus and City campus. Newmarket campus is a five-hectare campus adjacent to the major business area in Newmarket. The campus joins the City and Grafton campuses together to create an integrated inner-city campus cluster. The Epsom campus is the main faculty of Education campus and it is just less than 10 minutes’ drive from CBD and City campus. The Grafton campus is opposite the Auckland Hospital on the boundary of Auckland Domain. The Grafton campus is situated in the central city suburb of Grafton and it is also located in between the City and Newmarket campuses.


    Infrastructure at University of Auckland

    The University of Auckland has six campuses, five in Auckland and one in Whangarei in the Northland region. The university’s City campus has the majority of its students and it covers 16 hectares of natural land. You will also find the clock tower building on the City campus, the building is protected as a ‘Category I' historic place and was finished in 1926. The Tamaki campus covers 32 hectares in the suburb of Glenn Innes, and it is 12 Km from the City campus. The Grafton campus is opposite the Auckland city hospital in the suburb of Grafton, close to the city campus. The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, School of Pharmacy and Department of Optometry are based in the Grafton campus. The Epsom campus is the main Faculty of Education campus and it was formerly the Auckland College of Education’s main campus until the college merged with the University's School of Education in 2004. The Newmarket campus is a five-hectare campus and it is adjacent to the major business area in Newmarket. The university also built an engineering research space and a civil structures hall at the Newmarket campus. The Tai Tokerau campus in Whangarei has facilities like the Liegh Marine Laboratory which is a marine campus that hosts postgraduate teaching and research at the Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve (Goat Island) near Warkworth. Other facilities found on-campus includes cafes, health services, a library, and limited parking. The university also owns a 14-hectare winery in Waiheke Island and this winery hosts the University’s Wine Science courses.


    Residing Options at University of Auckland

    The University of Auckland offers a range of residential options for students. Residential Halls and Apartments are available, which provides food, accommodation, social and welfare services, alongside self-catered, private residences. There is also an on-going expansion of accommodation facilities that will see 2780 students housed in the University’s residences. Construction work had begun since 2015 on a 343-bed studio apartment complex on the corner of Symonds and Airdale streets and a further 800 catered beds are currently being planned and are expected to be completed by 2019.

    The Australian summers are warm to hot and winters are mild, with rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout the year. In summer, from December to February the average maximum temperatures are around 26°C. It can also be humid at this time with an average humidity of 65 percent.

    The University of Auckland has over 5,400 academic and professional staff, all lecturers are committed to inspiring the students to become lifelong learners and the quality of learning is the best. As a proof, the University's staff has received so many national awards recognising excellence in teaching.


    Financial aid at University of Auckland

    The University of Auckland awards scholarships to international students and up to 10 of these scholarships are awarded annually to those students who would love to undertake an undergraduate degree and a postgraduate diploma or taught masters. The amount given is about $10,000 per annum.  Other types of scholarships are awarded and loans can be given to any eligible student too.

    The Australian summers are warm to hot and winters are mild, with rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout the year. In summer, from December to February the average maximum temperatures are around 26°C. It can also be humid at this time with an average humidity of 65 percent.
