The University of Canterbury is located in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. Christchurch lies between the South Pacific Ocean and the Southern Alps, and it is an ideal city from which to explore New Zealand’s south island. From the natural mountains to the sea, it is only 1.5 hours to the foothills of Mount Cook National park and only 2.5 hours to Kaikoura’s famous beach and its dynamic mountain views.
The University of Canterbury has its main campus occupying 76 hectares (190 acres) of natural land at Ilam which is a suburb of Christchurch and about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from the centre of the city. The University's College of Education is adjacent to the main campus and the college has its own sports-fields and grounds. The University's College of Education also has additional small campuses in three cities and teaching centres in Greymouth, New Plymouth, and Rotorua. The University of Canterbury offers a variety of accommodation that will suit your lifestyle and budget. There is a UC Accommodation Student Village which offers well-furnished apartments in a safe and conducive environment. These apartments are fully furnished single rooms with bed, desk, wardrobe, bookshelf and an internet port. Students will get to have their own room and the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities are all shared. Some families living close to the university do offer to host an accommodation for the students, here a student will get to experience living with a local Christchurch family until the student finds a suitable place to stay. Some students choose to live off-campus, private houses or flats are available for such students to rent and these private rented houses or flats are not quite far from the university. International students under the age of 18 must either reside in New Zealand with a parent or a designated caregiver.
Generally, the warmest months are December, January, February, and the coldest are June, July, and August. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30° C, and in winter between 10-20°C. New Zealand has mild temperatures and the average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south.
