The University of Georgia Athens is located in the S Lumpkin Street in Athens, Georgia, approximately 72 miles northeast of Atlanta. Its setting is city, therefore, it is surrounded by a lot of great stores, supermarket and restaurants like J C Food Store, The Fresh Market, Walmart, The UPS Store, Sprint Stores, CVS, IHOP, Panera Bread, Red Lobster, Olive Garden and others to ensure that the students have a lot to do off-campus as well.
The UGA campus size is 762 acres; the campus has approximately 460 buildings; the university has two smaller campuses located in Tifton and Griffin. The main campus location is ranked among America’s best college town since it is surrounded by a lot of restaurants, bars and music scenes. The structures at the UGA campus have an architectural theme based on Federal, Classical and Antebellum style that still maintains its historic character. The UGA campus is divided into two sections, South Campus and North Campus, but years ago new facilities including the arts, academics, fitness and student housing have been built on what is known as the East Campus. The North Campus has a Chapel, one of the historic buildings of the University. The Chapel was one of the first Greek revival structures in Athens with its six massive Doric columns and classic design on the front it could be easily the finest building on campus. Also, the campus has a big number of libraries including the Main Library which as its name says is the principal, the Science Library, the Miller Learning Center, the Special Collection Library, the Map & Government Information Library, the Curriculum Materials Library, the Music Library and the Carnegie Library which is the newest and the one that support student learning on the Health Sciences Campus. On the East campus you can find the Ramsey Student Center that is one of the largest student recreational and athletic facility in the country, offering space for Badminton, Basketball, Cardio/Weight Training, Climbing, Handball, Martial Arts, Racquetball/Squash/Table Tennis, Soccer, Swimming and Volleyball.
The UGA offers a variety of comfortable options for housing on-campus. The campus counts with 27 Residence Halls that features Wi-Fi, Air conditioner, cable TV and some of them include common areas like kitchens, laundry rooms, computer labs, meeting rooms, study lounge and more. Residences like the Boggs Hall, Brumby Hall, Church Hall, Creswell Hall, Hill Hall, Lipscomb Hall, Mary Lyndon Hall, Mell Hall, Morris Hall, Payne Hall and Russell Hall offer double room with a community bathroom but the majority of them have restricted visitation and are designed mostly for first-year students. On the other hand, Residences like the Brown Hall, Building 1516, Oglethorpe House, Reed Hall, Rutherford Hall and Soule Hall offer double room suites with private bathroom for students of any year of course and they are allowed to have visitors. When it comes to the apartment style living, UGA offers residences including the Brandon Oaks Apartments, Busbee Hall, Kenny Road, McGowan Road, McWhorter Road, Rogers Road, Rooker Hall, University Village and Vandiver Hall. All these apartments offer amenities like high-speed internet, full kitchen, cable TV, Automatic Dishwasher and Roommate option.
Athens, Georgia has an average temperature of 62°F. The warm season is really hot and muggy, from May to September and the temperature rises over 71°F - 90°F and even on the hottest days of summer which is usually July, the temperature would rarely be over 97°F. The winters are very wet, usually from November to February but the temperature is rarely below 23°F. Athens, Georgia doesn’t suffer from extreme temperatures so with a good jacket and some sunglasses you will be good for the seasons.
The UGA learning experience is what you make of it; the university offers a big amount of opportunities and events. The faculty and staff of the university are approachable and kind. Professors are really caring and most of them try to make classes interactive so students won’t get bored.
The Office of Student Financial Aid at UGA is committed to advise students of their eligibility for financial assistance and educate them about the financial and academic responsibilities associated with the aids they offer. The university offers 4 types of aids including Grants, Loans, Work Study and Scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students. The Scholarships available for undergraduate students are the HOPE Scholarship, the Zell Miller Scholarship, Georgia Access Scholarship, scholarship for Engineering Education for Minorities, Georgia Hero Scholarship and UGA and Non-UGA Scholarship Information & Announcement; these last two scholarships are available for Graduate students too. When it comes to International students, they are also eligible for all the scholarships except federal need-based aid.
Students have several opportunities to work while they attend UGA, they can apply to Federal Work study that offers part-time, mostly on-campus jobs for students and they usually earn $7.90 per hour. Also, students can apply for student employment on their own. The university offers a job board known as “Handshake” which is the primary resource when searching for jobs, part-time work or internships and it is accessed online through the university’s Career Center homepage. Life after graduation is not bad at all for UGA alumni. The starting salary for UGA graduate starts around $43.000 a year and a Mid-Career salary could be around $90.000 a year which locates the university at the list of best value colleges.
