The University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth, fondly known as the UMass Dartmouth or UMassD is a public institution located in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts that was founded in 1895. It is one of five campuses and operating subdivisions of the University of Massachusetts. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar and it offers over 50 undergraduate programs and 25 master’s degree programs and 12 doctoral programs. The UMassD counts with seven colleges and schools including Charlton College of Business, College of Arts and Science, College of Engineering, College of Nursing, College of Visual and Performing Arts, School of Law, School of Marine Science and Technology and Interdisciplinary Programs. Location

The University of Massachusetts- Dartmouth is located in the Old Westport Rd in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, in the center of the South Coast region, between the cities of New Bedford to the east and Fall River to the west. Its setting is suburban, therefore, it is surrounded by a lot of great stores like Target, Home Depot, CVS Pharmacy, Best Buy and Walmart and Food Chains like Chipotle, Burger Kings, Dunkin’ Donuts, Applebee’s and other to ensure that the students have all they need on and off campus.


Infrastructure

The UMassD campus size is 710 acres; the campus has over 30 buildings and they were designed by internationally renowned Modernist architect Paul Rudolph, who wanted to distinguish the campus from the outside world and provide what might be considered a Social Utopian environment. The buildings are all designed with large windows, with the intended effect of giving those inside the feeling of being connected to the outdoors. The University’s Library the Claire T. Carney Library is the tallest building on campus other than the Campanile; originally it had six floors and was renovated in a more budget-friendly building. Another important building is the Charlton College of Business building, the structure was designed by Charles Rose and is very similar to Rudolph's design since is based in concrete. The campus has a campanile known as Karam Campanile, this structure is called a Campanile but is actually a communications tower, and it is also made of pure concrete and is over 200 feet tall.


Residing Options

The on-campus housing options at UMassB are arranged by the year the student is coursing, the freshmen are assigned to halls of three stories high offering a suite-style living completed furnished. The sophomores are assigned to the Oak Glenn Hall and the Pine Dale Hall, they are four floors of suite-style accommodations all double rooms. The upperclass students live in the Woodlands community-located near the Tripp Athletic Center, the residence has 6 buildings offering an apartment-style living. The apartments are fully furnished and provide single bedrooms with a bed, desk, chair, and built-in closets. Upperclass students also count with townhouses named Cedar Dell South and West, they offer six fully-furnished bedrooms, shared kitchen with appliances, living area, dining room and one and a half bathrooms. There are always off campus housing near the university where students can find housing starting from $500 per room.


Weather

Dartmouth, Massachusetts has an average temperature of 51°F. The summers are warm and humid, from June to September and the temperature rises over 65°F - 81°F. Nonetheless, even on the warmest days of the year, Dartmouth does not reach a temperature over 88°F. The cold season is usually chilly and wet; the annual low temperature is 43°F and winter lasts from December to March and the temperature rarely goes below 8°F. Massachusetts rarely suffers from heat waves since is usually very chill and in winter temperature are not as extreme as other states.


Faculty and pedagogy

The learning experience at UMassD is really good. The faculty and Staff are committed to offering the students a transformative life experience. Students claim that Professors are outstanding, always willing to help and that they teach their content in way that inspire students. The UMassD offers quality education, the content is accurate and complete and there are many options for courses and clubs.


Financial aid

The UMassD believes education is an investment in your future and they are committed to help students finance your education. The UMassD has 4 types of aids including Scholarships, Loans, Grants and Student Employment. The university offers 9 different Grants including the Federal ones and four Federal Loans and Private Loans from different organizations. Student Employment is always an option to finance your educations and if they apply to Federal Work-Study they are able to work off campus and earn a higher amount of money. The Scholarships are assigned by college or schools, the Art and Sciences Scholarship, the Business Scholarship, the Engineering Scholarship, the Nursing Scholarship, Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship and the University Extension Scholarships. The University also offers General Scholarships which are based on a variety of factors like GPA, state residents, undergraduate and graduate programs, honors programs, freshman for Massachusetts and much more. There isn’t a scholarship just for International students, however, they can be eligible for other scholarships if they meet the hours require or have a high GPA.


Jobs and placements

There is a variety of student employment opportunities at University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth. There are two kinds of student employment which include the Federal Work Study and the Non-Work Study the difference between them is that with Federal Work study students are able to work off campus. On campus students can find a job in academics, administration, athletics, the library, maintenance, public safety, student affairs, technology and many more areas. The UMassD has an online system for students to search jobs, contact supervisors and complete forms, the system is called CORSAIR Jobs and it would provide students and supervisors all the information needed for the process of student employment. UMassD Alumni salary after graduation may vary depending on their degree, for example, a median salary for a Mechanical Engineer is about $85,000 a year but a median salary of a Graphic Designer is about $76,000 which is still not bad.

Verdict

The University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth is a great college that offers a variety of majors and minor well priced for a quality education. Faculty and Staff are really committed to help students succeed in their career, although, many students do not like the campus since is not very modern because most of the structures are made of concrete, the campus offers beautiful green areas a handful of activities for students. In UMassD there are many opportunities for students to grow.
