The University of Nebraska- Lincoln, fondly known as the UNL or UN, is a public research university located in Lincoln, Nebraska that was founded in 1869. It is the state's oldest university and the largest in the University of Nebraska system. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar and it offers over 150 majors to choose from. The University of Nebraska- Lincoln is located in the R Street in Lincoln, Nebraska, between the Salt Creek Roadway and the N Antelope Valley Pkwy. Its setting is the city; therefore, it is surrounded by a lot of supermarket and stores like Viet Hao Market, Buffalo Wings & Rings, Chipotle, Panda Express, T. J. Maxx, CVS Pharmacy and others to ensure that the students have a lot to do off-campus as well.
The UNL campus size is 622 acres; the campus has over 100 buildings, divided in the city campus and the East campus. Both campuses include academic and research facilities, libraries, residential buildings, recreation centers, networking building. Also, both campuses count with beautiful landscapes and big green areas, which are administered as the UNL Botanical Garden and Arboretum. One of the oldest buildings on campus is the Love Library that was built in 1945, it was the largest building on campus when it was completed, it has more than 50 study rooms, an auditorium, a student lounge and it house more than 800,000 items. Another great structure that is definitely worth to mention is the Memorial Stadium located on east campus, the stadium is home to the Husker football team and its structure is a combination of the old and new and it’s been renovated with an expansion and a lot of modern designs, always maintaining the integrity of the original building. On the city campus, you can also find the Sheldon Museum of Art, the building was designed by architect Philip Johnson and is also a U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the museum houses a variety of collections and sculpture of early modernism, geometric abstraction, color field painting, minimalism and contemporary art.
The Department of Residence Life at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln believes that on campus living is a vital component of the college experience, that’s why they are in charge of making students feel like they are home. The University offers several housing options including 17 residence halls, divided 14 on the city campus and 3 on east campus. There are three options of on campus housing, the traditional, the suite-style and the Apartment Style. The Traditional halls feature two-person rooms, a community bathroom and 5-7 day meal plan; the Traditional halls available are Abel Hall, Harper Hall, Husker Hall, Kauffman Hall, Love Hall, Massengale Residential Center, Neihardt Hall, Sandoz Hall, Schramm Hall, Selleck Hall and the Smith Hall. The Suite-Style living offers two types of room, double bedrooms designed for freshmen students and single bedroom unit for upperclassmen; the Suite-Style living available are the Knoll Residential Center, Universities Suites and the Eastside Suites. The Apartment style housing options are designed for upperclassmen and graduate students who are ready for a more independent living environment; the apartment styles available are The Courtyards, Massengale Residential Center and The Village.
Lincoln, Nebraska has an average temperature of 51°F. The warm season is really humid and mostly clear, from May to September and the temperature rises over 68°F - 89°F. The summer days are very hot but it rarely goes above 98°F. The cold season is usually dry, windy and freezing; the annual low temperature is 40°F and the winter lasts from November to February and the temperature rarely goes below 10°F. If moving to Lincoln it’s on your mind just make sure to be ready for the cold days.
The learning experience at UNL offers great academic resources and research opportunities besides having the academic communities to help you out. Students claim that professors really care about individuals, are easy to approach, inspiring and very friendly. The majority of professors dedicated to research projects is very experienced and encourage students to reach their full potential.
The UNL offers undergraduate students different types of grants, federal work-study, private and federal loans and scholarships. On the other hand, graduate students can apply to University Tuition Assistance Grants for full-time graduate and law students; the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant where The U.S. Department of Education's TEACH Grant Program provides funds to students who are required to begin a career in teaching; Federal Work-Study that offers part-time jobs during the academic year and full-time jobs during the summer for students who have financial need and who must earn a part of their educational expenses; graduate students are also eligible for Fellowships and Assistantships which are awarded through the academic departments of each program. For International students, if they are already admitted to the UNL they are all eligible for six merit-based scholarships.
There are a variety of student employment opportunities at University of Nebraska- Lincoln.
