The University of Nevada, Reno is located in 1664 N Virginia St in Reno, Nevada, between the N Sierra Street and the Evans Avenue. Its setting is urban, therefore, it is surrounded by a lot of great stores and restaurants like Save Mart Supermarkets, Safeway, Valley Market, Raley’s, UPS Store, 99 Cents Only Store, Panda Express, Denny’s, Jimmy John’s and others to ensure that the students have a lot to do off-campus as well.
The UNR campus is located north of downtown Reno overlooking Truckee Meadows and the downtown casinos and its size is 290 acres; the campus has over 100 buildings and it is characterized by fall/spring foliage areas, modern architecture and for having a few buildings with the newest and most technologically advanced features. The University has seven libraries but the main one is called Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, this is a facility that goes far beyond the traditional campus library as it combines technology classrooms, video conferencing facilities, and specialized computer labs with library functions; the library has a lot of space, is comfortable and has a casual atmosphere. The campus also has an Arboretum that contains about 200 species of trees, flowers, shrubs, ornamentals and native flora. The Mackay Stadium is the outdoor athletic stadium at the UNR, is the home of the Nevada Wolf Pack and it seats 26,000. The stadium is usually used by the football team and the women soccer team.
The University strives to provide comfortable, safe and welcoming accommodations for students who choose to live on campus. The UNR campus counts with eight residence halls for students to choose from. The Argenta Hall offers large triple rooms with bathroom in each room. The Canada Hall is a five-story building that offers furnished apartment-style suites with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen are in each suite. The Juniper Hall is for both women and men and it offers double and single rooms suites with dressing room, closet area and washbasin. The Nevada LLC offers three different configurations for four, five or six students per suite. The Nye Hall is the traditional residence hall on campus that offers two occupancy rooms with a community bathroom. The Sierra Hall is designed for transfer students and upperclassmen and it offers single-sex rooms with private bathroom. The Peavine Hall is a beautiful modern five-storey building that offers suite-style rooms with a variety of configurations for single, triple and double occupancy. Finally, for graduate students there is the Ponderosa Village that offers one and two-bedroom luxury apartments including in-unit washer and dryers, energy efficient appliances and complimentary high-speed Internet.
Reno, Nevada has an average temperature of 53°F. The warm season is really hot and arid, from June to September and the temperature rises over 58°F - 91°F. In summer the hottest month is usually July and the temperature could rise up to 94°F. The cold season is usually chilly and partly cloudy; the annual low temperature is 40°F and the winter lasts from November to February but the temperature is rarely below 13°F.
The learning experience at UNR is good. Students claim that there are really good professors and others that are just okay but in general, they really care about their student’s education and make a decent class. Engineering programs are one of the best and the academic content is really good and complete.
The Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships at UNR aims to help make a University education more affordable. For incoming students there is the Freshman Scholarship Matrix, the Presidential Scholarship with a minimum of 3.50 GPA; the National Merit Scholarships, Medical students Scholarships and the Scholarships given by each department or school. For Continuing and Graduate students there are a limited number of scholarships available, however, the student can apply for scholarships and fellowship opportunities in their departments and schools/colleges. International students are expected to have enough resources to meet their expenses but about the 80% of international graduate students receive graduate assistantships from academic departments.
Student employment at UNR is intended to be a learning experience that complements a student’s academic and career goals and provides valuable work experience. At UNR you only need to do an online application, enter personal information and attach the requested documents. Then, you would be ready to search through the list of on-campus and off-campus jobs provided by the university. As UNR alumni, between 1 to 4 years of experience, you will earn a starting salary of about $50,000 a year but it would always depend on the degree you majored in.
The University of Nevada – Reno has a perfect location and offers a beautiful campus, there are plenty of opportunities in the community and great professors if you make an effort. The university is best known for their Engineering College which offers one of the best programs in the state. UNR is known for being a party college so if you are not much into it, there are things to reconsider.
