Informally addressed as “Newcastle University” The University of Newcastle(UON), is an Australian public university located in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The institution was established in 1965 and can be traced to the Newcastle Teachers College (which was founded in 1949) and Newcastle University College(NUC, founded in 1951). The university has its primary campus in Callaghan, a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales and other campuses in Ourimbah, Port Macquarie, Singapore, Newcastle CBD, and Sydney CBD.

In the year 2016 to 2017, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings(THE) ranked UON in the top 250 universities in the World. In 2015, the Era Assessment ranked the University of Newcastle in the Top 8 universities for research that is ‘well above world standards’. In 2018, UON was placed in the Top 200 in the world in 15 different subject areas, and still n the same year, UON ranked 214th in the QS World University Rankings, up with an impressive 84 places in six years. And so many other rankings have made UON a prestigious institution.

University of New Castle's Callaghan campus is the main and largest campus, it is located in the Newcastle suburb of Callaghan situated approximately 12 Kilometre and 7miles from Newcastle CBD. The central coast(Ourimbah) which is cross-institutional campus is located in the central coast suburb of Ourimbah, while the Port Macquarie campus is located on the New South Wales North Coast off a Pacific Highway and takes just a few hours away from Sydney, Newcastle, and Brisbane. The Sydney campus is located in a brand new, purpose-built premises on Elizabeth street and then the Singapore campus which has its ideal location for the delivery of the institution's programs in the region.


University of Newcastle's main campus at Callaghan is only 12 kilometres from beaches and the middle of Newcastle - a vibrant beautiful city with exciting activities in it. The campus contains very attractive architectural designed buildings and top infrastructure which scatters all over the 140 hectares of natural bushland. You will find so many spectacular sporting facilities like a 50m indoor heated pool, an 18m climbing wall(second highest in Australia), a fully equipped gymnasium, martial arts/aerobic studios and two competition indoor courts. Callaghan is well serviced by bus and train transportation and it has an easy access to the F3 Freeway. Newcastle itself is a vibrant port city on a breathtaking stretch of Australia's coastline. The city has beautiful beaches, nice weather, a casual lifestyle and proximity to Sydney.

Residing Options

The University of New Castle offers a variety of residential options which would be favourable and satisfying for the students. If it is private or shared rooms, private or shared facilities, if you want to do the cooking activities yourself or need a chef to do that for you, the university will provide those services. For students who would love to stay off-campus, there are several residential options given by the university which includes private rooms, apartments, and houses. Some families who live near the university also offer to host students coming from overseas in their homes for short or long stays. The university will arrange each homestay, ensuring that all homes and host families are safe and friendly.


The weather is okay in Australia. it's mild and mostly sunny, a nice climate to spend some time at the beach and explore so many beautiful cities, however, if there is a hazardous climate then the officials at the university will ensure that all students skip their classes or any on-going activity and take necessary shelter.

Faculty and pedagogy

The University of Newcastle has a total number of 1,068 academic staff and a total of 1,537 administrative staff. The lectures are well taught, and classes can be administered online too, the main goal of the lecturers are educating the students effectively so that they could prepare themselves to face any challenge in future.

Financial aid

The University of Newcastle offers scholarships to international students and they include financial support for students from different countries, awarding the best students for their academic excellence and funding for research students. A body called ASPEN also awards scholarship programs to support indigenous students to complete a degree in Nursing or social work, grants and loans are also offered in the University.

The University of New Castle aims at giving the best quality of educational resources, in the year 2017, the institution had received some complaints about the issues affecting the university’s School of Nursing and Midwifery and its system of placement. The university strives to tackle these problems in other to ensure an enhanced educational system for its students.
