Located in the heart of North Texas’ Silicon Prairie with the highest concentration of high technology work force, UTD campus is located in Richardson. It is 20 km away from downtown Dallas and about 3-4 hour drive from Austin and Houston.
University of Texas at Dallas is built on a lovely 710 acre campus. As a young university, UTD has focused on modern green infrastructure and has created world class research facilities in various areas of engineering, sciences, and management.
While on-campus living is certainly an option (at about $5500 per year), most grad students choose to live outside of campus, so as to get some much needed space, privacy and freedom. The rents in and around Richardson work out to about $7500 per year on an average, but this too gets divided considerably if you live with roommates. The further away from the university you go, the lower the rents fall, so it’s not difficult to find a place to match your wallet.
Dallas experiences extremes of climate across the year. Summers are terribly hot, while winters can get rather cold, though there isn’t any snowfall. Fall (autumn) and spring are quite pleasant compared to the rest of the year, when the weather really is curse-worthy.
UT Dallas has grown rapidly in last ten years and has added many distinguished faculty that include members of National Academy and Fellows of various societies. A large number of new junior faculty have won prestigious awards, and numerous faculty hold endowed chairs in recognition of their contributions to education and research. UTD has had three Nobel Laureates on its faculty.
Being a public university, UTD tends to be generous with scholarships, though you can’t take them for granted, since they’re all performance and/or need based. Of course, you can also always get Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships, especially if you’re Indian.
Some of the topmost fortune 100 companies are regularly hiring from UTD. UTD itself is surrounded by 500 companies and companies like Intel, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Apple, and more are commonly seen hiring in big numbers from Engineering and Computer Science.
It is a rapidly rising university that attained Tier I research status in the heart of one of the largest metroplex areas in US. It is one of top three public universities in the state of Texas.
