About Victoria University, Melbourne

The Victoria University, Melbourne  was created in1991, but its history goes back to 1916, when the original school, the Footscray technical School, was established. It was intended to offer an education that would prepare them for a role in the skilled worker category  and lift them out of the unskilled category. Today it is considered the university of the West and boasts of around 40 000 students following higher education and vocational education and training in various campuses of the university. Times of Higher Education (THE) World Rankings for 2016, 2017 and 2018 have ranked the university among the world’s Top 2%. THE University rankings 2017 have placed it 56 among the the world’s top universities aged under 50.  The Victoria university is a public university, one of the 39 such public universities in Australia, which is a dual-sector university where students following vocational training could create a pathway to higher education, from a certificate course to  undergraduate and even a postgraduate degree. Courses are offered in the disciplines of Arts, Business, Computers and IT, Education. Engineering and science, Health and Bio-medicine and Law and Justice The campuses are located in Melbourne’s central Business District  and western suburbs. There are 7 campuses across the central business district and the suburbs of Melbourne.

Location

The flagship campus of the Victoria University, the City Flinders campus,  is located at Footscray, Melbourne. The business and multimedia teaching and learning facilities are found in this campus. It is opposite Melbourne’s grand Flinders street station, the Yarra river and the Southbank precinct making it an easy location to access transport.


Infrastructure

The City Flinders campus is a modern, 19 story building in the center of Melbourne’s busy central business district. As the campus is in a central location it is in easy reach places to shop andobtain great food.

The campus has learning spaces and lounges for relaxation . The lounges are equipped with WiFi facilities, power points, furniture and kitchenette facilities.  It contains a convention hall.

The Victoria university has 7 libraries namely ,City Flinders library, City King learning space, City Queen library, Footscray park library, St.Albans library, Sunshine library and the Werribee library  across the campuses.   The libraries provide facilities such as WiFi access, individual and group study spaces, printing, scanning  and copying facilities, specialist software and PCs and laptops.

The Victoria Graduate School of Business has  business incubators , high tech meeting rooms replicating a business center, and industry standard computer labs and many other modern learning and teaching resources in a comfortable and spacious environment. In addition to the City Flindrs campus library the students are provided with access to a professional online business databases and a specialist business library. 

The university provided  facilities include.  accommodation, bookshops,  conference and meeting rooms, creative arts facilities, food and catering, gyms and fitness centers, parenting rooms, prayer rooms and reflection centers and a TV studio for hire. The City Flinders campus is surrounded by an abundance of restaurants and cafes featuring the best Melbourne has to offer. The VenU restaurant is the award winning training restaurant that is open to the public during semester, The other campuses also feature numerous food options.


Residing Options

The Victoria university provides housing to the students at UniLodge, which is 7 kilometers from the heart of Melbourne and within walking distance from the Footscray park campus. Convenient public transport is available for the resident students. The apartments are fully furnished.

If students opt for off campus housing the Student Housing Services provide renting advice and assistance, access to the Student housing database, links to groups and support programs that help in finding right accommodation and  advice on tenancy issues.


Weather

In Melbourne the summers are warm The winters are cold and windy and is partly cloudy the year round. The temperatures vary between 43°F and 79°F. It rarely goes below 36°F or above 94°F. The period between early January and early March is considered best for warm weather activities.


Faculty and pedagogy

The MBA course of studies is aimed at obtaining a total of 144 competed credit points.

There are 09 core units each worth 12 credits giving a total of 108 credit points. The option 1 consists of the business research project worth 12 credits and electives worth 24 credits to be  chosen from a range of business postgraduate courses available at the business school. The option  2 consists of the business research proposal worth 12 credit units and the business research thesis worth 24 credits points. Option 3 is open only for the online students.

The optional internship carries 12 credit points and gives the opportunity for the student to participate in an extended period of work integrated learning through placement in a professional organization relevant to the field of study. This could be either short term workplace assignments, projects, internships or practicums, part time or casual employment or voluntary work.


Financial aid

The Victoria university offers annually hundreds of scholarships worth millions of dollars worth for students at all levels. The MBA graduates with good academic performances are are eligible for the VU Dean’s Scholarship, Indian students with good academic performances may apply for this scholarship. There are number of scholarships for international students funded by the Australian Government , the Victoria university and external agencies. Enrolled students have to submit properly filled applications to the university. The scholarships are awarded based on factors such as  low income or financial disadvantage, educational disadvantage, caring for others,  disability, language background, indigenous background and any other demonstrated hardship. A student may apply for a number of scholarships.


Jobs and placements

The university has links with the Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA), Government Institute of Australia, Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) and Graduate Management Association of Australia (GMAA) to facilitate and enhance employment opportunities.

The career Development and Employment team provides a range of online and face to face services including one-to-one counselling, job apllication reviews, access to online jobs board. Number of events are held regularly to develop personal and professional skills, ranging from social evenings to career palnning workshops.
