Western Michigan University is a national research University which was founded in 1903 by Mr. Dwight Waldo. The University was earlier named as Western State Normal School which offered two-year training programs. Mr. Waldo served as the principal and president of the school. The University has one of the largest aviation programs in the US. The University is famous for its supportive learning environment, outstanding academic programs, diverse campus and dynamic activities of students.

The University is situated in Kalamazoo city in Michigan State of the US. The city is equidistant from major American cities like Detroit and Chicago, which are located at a distance of less than 150 miles from the city of Kalamazoo. The city of Kalamazoo is easily reachable by almost all the different types of transportation. Like for instance, if you take the road, highway M-43, US 131, M-96, I-94 can take to this city while Amtrak as well as the Grand Elk Railroad is the rail service which serves this city. Greyhound and Indian trails are the bus services offered in this city.
University provides many facilities for students. The College of Aviation a leading and prestigious Aviation program in the US. It owns and operates a CIRRUS SR-20 fleet alongwith several testing sites for turbine engine. Facility for the same is located at Battle Creek, W. K. Kellogg Airport in Michigan. The University also has multipurpose Bernhard Centre along with bookstores, food-court and bank. The Waldo Library is well equipped and comprehensive. Students also get reap benefits of University Computing Centre and Dalton Musical centre. The students are also provided with a large venue for entertainment called Miller Auditorium which had the capacity of 3500 people.
The housing options comprise residential neighbourhoods. Each neighbourhood has a distinct combination of the residence halls, apartments, dining services, cultural and academic resources. Residing on campus adds on to advantages of participating in college activities, other learning activities and social networking.Residence halls support most of the students. Western Heights is new innovative kind of residence hall specially designed for new freshmen. Western view is also a new housing complex which provides private bedrooms along with study space and fitness room. It is designed for upperclassmen and graduates. Apartments like Elmwood, Goldsworth valley and Stadium Drive are located near the campus and have most of the utilities.
There are plenty of accommodation options open for students seeking to stay off campus. Some of these accommodations are in the neighborhood areas like Greenhill Apartments, Davis Creek Apartments, Mansard House Apartments, Sage Terrace Apartments, Aspen Ridge, Drake’s Pond Apartments, Mount Royale, Concord Place, Nottingham Place Apartments, Peppertree, Summer Ridge Apartments etc. The average cost of all these accommodations are somewhere around $600.
The common thing among winter and fall semesters is snow. It also rains when it is not snowing. However, the weather never has any impact on classes and other schedules of the Colleges.
The teaching and administrative staffs of the University are well qualified and professional. The teachers are doctorate and post doctorates which share their expertise with the students and make teaching a wonderful moment for them. They share their professional experiences with the student and make them aware about further career-related challenges and big steps. Equally, they support them at every step of the learning process.
The aim of the Financial Aid Office, University is to increase access to an affordable education by being the University’s central source for financial aid, information, planning, funding and education. The Staff provides all sort of guidance upon budget, finance management, student’s loans, etc. They also provide valuable advice and tips to the International students about lifestyle other residence related information.
The University regards as Student employment as ancillary to its primary activity i.e. enrolment for any course at the University. The students are provided with all sort of support right from resume writing till preparation for facing an interview.
The University boasts of more than 300 student groups and organizations in which students can participate. Every academic year starts with new students being welcomed by the ‘Bronco Bash’ which consists of live performances as well as booths. The Activities Board of the campus also arranges for entertaining nights like “At the Show” concerts, “Miller Movies”, “Special Events Live” etc. Besides these, the university is well represented by the Western Student Association along with the Graduate Student Association which is managed exclusively by students. Then there are a number of different interests or special groups like LGBT, Greek Life, Spiritual Development, Off-Campus Life, Multicultural Affairs, etc in which students can participate and contribute actively.
The University has numerous student organisations and activities that make the campus life cool and happening. There are currently more than 300 registered organisations which a student may join. ‘Bronco bash’, a live event of performances and fun is another attraction. The University also provides other facilities for health and wellbeing of students.
Department of Public safety is actively partnered with Residence life and campus community. It is teamwork of the Police Department, Parking services, Environmental Safety and Emergency management and the Bronco Card Centre. There are several guidelines and protocols which are stipulated by the University and mandatory for all the students and Staff to follow them. Other safety measures like fire safety, etc are also taken care of by the Administration.

Western Michigan Univesrity is a dynamic and diverse University with a wonderful academic environment. If you wish to have all of these then it is WMU. The University has largely fared quite well although on some counts especially those pertaining to on campus safety, the campus has received some minus points. In addition to this, some students also felt that the university in some courses and disciplines does not have many learning opportunities for students.
