Founded in the year 1959, York University is the second largest university in Ontario and the third largest in entire Canada. It has more than 55,000 students and 11 faculties, including Faculty for Science, Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, Education, Health, Fine Arts, Graduate Studies, Environmental Studies, Lassonde School of Engineering, Glendon College, Osgoode Hall Law School, and Schulich School of Business. Moreover, it also has 28 research centers.

Location

The university has two major campuses- Keele Campus and Glendon Campus. The third campus of the university is still under construction in the Markham area of Ontario. Apart from this, there are also satellite facilities in the downtown Toronto.
Keele Campus of the university is located in the northern part of Ontario and borders the York region. It is spread across 457 acres of land and is the largest post-secondary campus in the entire Canada. York University’s most of the faculties, including Business, Environmental Studies, Law, Fine Arts, Education, Health, Engineering and Science, are located at the Keele Campus.
Glendon Campus is merely a liberal arts faculty which is located in the Lawrence Part neighbourhood of Toronto. It is the only university campus in Canada which requires the students to take courses n both the official languages of Canada- English and French. Students at Keele and Glendon can use the resources and take courses at both the campuses.
Travelling to and from the campuses of York is easy and quick. The university promotes the use of public transport and offers complimentary shuttle services to the GO Train Stations that are close to the campuses. Moreover, there is also a shuttle that runs between the Keele and Glendon campuses. Also, the university has its own Van Go service, which is exclusively for the people with disabilities.
Toronto is a city which is known for its clubs and nightlife. For students at the Keele campus, John Street and Richmond Street are the places to have the best time. Moreover, there are also a few beaches in the eastern part of Toronto, which are ideal for weekend trips when the weather is good. Queen Street to the south and Eaton Center to the east are two of the best places for shopping. In short, students will have a number of entertaining things to do around the campus.


Infrastructure

To cater to such large numbers of students, the university has made adequate arrangements as well. There are a total of 33 eateries on campus and even a retail mall to make sure that the students have easy access to everything that they need right within the campus. The university has a total of 9 undergraduate residential colleges, including Vanier Residence, Winters Residence, Founders Residence, Calumet Residence, Norman Bethune, Sting Residence, New College Residence, McLaughlin Residence, and the Glendon Residence, which is separately located at the Glendon campus.
All the 8 residential buildings at the Keele campus are managed by the Centre for Student Community and Leadership Development (SCLD). Every residence building is associated with one of the above mentioned colleges. Each residence building has Residence Dons, Resident Life Coordinators, and Night Porters.


Residing Options

For students looking for off-campus accommodations, the university has its own Students Village in Toronto which is spread across 130 acres of land. The accommodations at this Village are owned by locals and the university offers all the help to students in finding an affordable and comfortable accommodation. Students can apply for on-campus and off-campus accommodations through the university’s website.


Weather

Weather in Ontario is pretty cold, especially for the Indian students. July is the warmest month with a temperature average of about 20 degree Celsius and January is the coolest month with a temperature average of about -5 degree Celsius. However, the temperatures can fall up to -20 degree Celsius and even more in the winter months. While the snowfall is not very heavy, it can be experienced throughout the year.


Faculty and pedagogy

York University has some of the best professors who are global leaders in their field of study. Even though they have such high reputation, they are extremely easy to approach. Interactions between teachers and students are very common and the students can easily approach them with their problems. While the university has some professors that are new to teaching, they too have an abundance of knowledge about their fields and are extremely helpful.


Financial aid

York University has a number of programs through which it helps local and international students financial for their studies at the university. Some of the most famous programs are Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), Out-of-Province Students Program, and 30% Off Ontario Tuition Grant. Moreover, the university also has a special program for Indian students, known as the International Student Loans for Indian Nationals.


Jobs and placements

Compared to a number of other universities in Ontario, York is the one that lays a major emphasis on their student’s placements. Many courses offered by the university include a 1-year paid internship in their field of study. This provides them with a hands-on experience of the modern workplace culture and allows them to sharpen the skills that are required to professionally excel in their fields. Apart from thus, the university also provides support in finding a job, guidance on creating CVs, applications, cracking interviews, and a lot more.
